![]() All fun aside, at anything less than 18-19 psi a 15g will perform better.

![]() I have a vf48 on my other car, plenty power for an old guy like me on public roads. I’m running that one at 18.5psi. The TD04HL 19T on the highway at 70mph is amazing, it responds to the smallest gas pedal input, like a naturally aspirated car, but better. It is the most responsive turbo car I’ve ever owned.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my SoCal ported vf48 but I keep thinking I want a vf34. For the way I use my cars anything bigger is a waste, I don’t really use top end, it’s all about low end and midrange performance for me. ![]() Hey D-Rodman,
I don't think VF34 that much different compared with VF48 (except it is ball bearing). Perhaps you may want to look into it again. |

![]() You are correct, vf48 and vf34 are very similar but the vf34 with the bb center is noticeably more responsive. I installed a vf34, it’s not responsive like a td04HL 19t but I didn’t think it would be.

![]() There was only one way to really figure it out, to install a vf34. I’ve come to realize the jdm ej205 and ej207 are significantly different in terms of driveability. The ej205 with the wrx 5 speed and the Arashi td04HL 19T is a better dd, amazing driveability. The ej207 likes to get reved, to stay in 6th gear happily it needs to be traveling above 65mph. Once the highway speed drops below 65mph I must shift to 5th gear and the rpm’s shoot to 4,000. I have the entire v7 drivetrain, all from the same car, makes the driver really work the transmission and rpm’s, more fun to drive. Ej205 is much better in terms of fuel economy. I like having two similar cars that are different enough, I love driving both.

![]() @d-rodman, TD04-HLA-19t with a straight inlet and twinscroll, now THATS a perfect DD turbo.
I'm running that on one of my cars, it's got a rebuilt ej22 (yes NA, high 9's to 1 compression) with wrx heads, non avcs, 5MT/4.11FD trans.... |

That must feel like a naturally aspirated setup, nice! My Arashi still performing like a champ. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC Last edited by D-Rodman; 05-01-2023 at 09:19 AM. |

![]() Gunshed, I have also been curious over the years about 19Ts. And I have also wondered if the H as opposed to the L or HL might be the sweet spot. If I had the budget I would have one built for a trial and error test.
Build what fits your driving style, interests, and goals. I used to drive V8’s and like the feel of low - mid range twerqs. But I also love the go cart feel of the WRX. So I am trying to get the best of both worlds in a budget daily. That said, I had the fortunate experience of going for a ride in D-Rodman’s 9-2X. With the JDM EJ205, the AVCS operating, and the TD04HL-19T it felt exactly like what I was envisioning for my own dd. I loved it, that is the direction I am going to go. |

Responsive but low power setups suit my commute nicely. I have a e30 s52 swap with cams and all the bolt-ons. The real icing on top is a 3.46diff. I run out of gear at 150mph, but I’ll never hit that. |

![]() Sorry, no Dyno sheet either.
You can pick up an HLA-19t for dirt cheap since they aren't interchangeable with STI twinscroll, and there's really no upgrade path. All I had to do was get a straight inlet compressor cover (from ARD iirc) and a flange that I had welded onto a regular downpipe. |

![]() Followed this thread while sorting a replacement for my blown stock turbo after 150k miles. I had been happy with the up-pipe, downpipe, and tune. Never one to waste a decent mechanical failure, I upgraded.
Dyno'd at 285hp/238lbft on 91 octane Td04HL-19T up pipe downpipe turbo blanket TMIC & Y pipe, grimmspeed scoop split, grimmspeed blow off valve, turbosmart Cobb intake/airbox boost solenoid, grimmspeed ID1050x injectors Phenolic spacers TGV delete 340LPH fuel pump AOS Early days, but love it so far. Peak torque around 3750rpm. Drives a lot like the stage 2, but with better top end. |

![]() Only one other turbo I’ve had that I’d say it is a worthy opponent, IHI VF35.
It was stock on 2L STi in England, tuners there got great results with it. The chra is the same used on vf39 and vf48 but it has a smaller hot side, same cold side as the two mentioned counterparts. I still have a low mile one in a box, amazing turbo. I’m running a twinscroll vf37 at the moment. Very pleased with it also. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC |
