Default Are there really any safe intakes for my 97 Legacy GT?

My neighbor just got a K&N intake for his sunfire today, and I'm in love with the sound. The only one ive found so far is Weapon R and I've seen some horror stories around I-club.

PLEASE help me guys, I know you will

If you have an open cone filter under the hood w/o some sort of heat shield you'll be pulling in warm air:

Something that is cheap and safe would work like this that I did in my RS. The 97 Legacy dosen't have a torque box (the one on the throttle body) that opens to take a filter.

I have a 97 Legacy 2.5GT and have had a weapon-R intake for almost two years now. I haven't had any problems with it, although what you may find with a weapon-R intake or any tube intake/cone filter setup is that you will lose some low-end power, but gain at the higher end. This is due to the elimination of the airbox which holds a plenum of air. (do a search on intakes in the forums and you'll find many detailed discussions about this).

In terms of sound, it is pretty loud so you may want to take that into consideration. Overall, it has performed very well for me and I have enjoyed the increased power.

I think all the "horror stories" you've heard about these intakes are with the 99 GT's because the MAF is different. I'm not positive, but myabe somebody else can clarify this.

There aren't any for the Legacy that wouldn't have to be fudged with besides the weapon-r.

Larry Ganz's intake is totally adaptable if you are up to the challenge. You can make the cone style, or you can do the bpm/cold air style. You'd just have to be able to modify piping and mount a MAF.

I guess it depends on how bad you want to do it.

on my mom's (soon to be mine in august) 98 2.2L, I ran a cone filter in the stock airbox, enlarged the fender passage

Louder?= minor, but a definitely different sound
Performance= minor (it is almost always in your head)
