Default Spy Shots: Is This a Test Mule for the New Focus RS or a Focus Facelift?

While we try our best to gather information and use our investigating skills to identify most prototypes, there are times that carmakers leave us in the dark. This very lightly camouflaged Ford Focus hatchback captured by our scoop photographers that you see pictured here is one such example.
What we can tell you about this test car is that, the only part of the vehicle covered up is the front grille, and that the central exhaust pipes and the size of the brake discs, point to the 252hp Focus ST.

Taking into consideration these details and the fact that the current generation Focus was launched in 2010, we can think of three possibilities, the first of which is that Ford is preparing the compact model for a light facelift in the likes of the Fiesta with a new Aston Martin-esque snout.

However, it could also be that the modified front grille is feeding air to Ford's upcoming 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with up to 350-horses, which means this might be an early test-mule for the next Focus RS.

A third possibility is that Ford is trying our new mechanical components or perhaps a tweaked engine from its current portfolio.

With that lack of wheel-gap, I'm guessing test mule for something fun.

I think everyone is in a rush to incorporate radiator shutters like the Cruze & future XV Hybrid have. I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing some environmental testing to collect data on various grille opening sizes.

The ST already has grill shutters, and test mules of the next F150 and Mustang have already been spotted with them.

I didn't notice the low ride height. Crazy "gap"
