![]() Own a 2011 WRX sedan. Was driving home tonight and all of the sudden had my clutch pedal stick the floor. Was able to lift it back up with force, but the clutch would not engage after that. At first I was thinking it was just the slave cylinder failing, but after a closer look it was a major leak in the clutch master cylinder. Had a friend press the clutch down while I took a peek and saw a major amount of fluid leak NOT from any hoses or connections, but from the bottom of the master cylinder where no connections even exist.
I scowered Google and wasn't able to find anyone else with this exact issue. Not being too familiar with the way the master cylinder is built, I have no clue if there is a seal down there or if it may be a crack of some sort. Any one have any ideas if this is a common issue? Or even better, can it be easily fixed without giving it to the dealer for a week? Much appreciation in advance!

![]() i just had the same exact thing happen to my 2008 Sti. I got in the car this morning to drive it to work and the clutch pedal just went strait to the floor and stuck there. I took a vid of what the clutch master cylinder did when i pumped the clutch and fluid just came pouring out the bottom. I am not sure what could've caused this to happen. What did the dealer end up saying about it? Has anyone else had this happen?

![]() I know exactly what this problem is. I experienced the same thing in my 11 sti. One of the plates in the USELESS, stupid "damper" on the bottom of the master cylinder cracks/breaks apart and the pressure from the clutch forces the fluid through. I actually have pictures of everything.
You need a new master, or you'll have to machine a replacement part. (i did both) |

![]() Nope. i drove the car yesterday just fine. I took a video of the under side of the clutch master cylinder and there's a snap pin in there that appears to be rusted.
Kuros, can i see the pictures? could i just used some sealant on it and just fill it in? |

![]() No, sealant wont help anything. The amount of pressure running through there is huge. Its enough to snap hardened steel plate.
There is a hardened steel piece in there that is broken, and the only way to get a new one is, unfortunately, a whole new clutch master. Ill get some pics up soon. |

![]() Bump this back to the top. Had the same thing happen to a customer car. Pulled all the guts and reservoir off of the mast body and welded the hole shut.

![]() Bump again for this BS happening again. My master cylinder crapped out at a stop light this afternoon! Anyone know of a better part than the OEM one? Is welding it really the only way to solve the problem permanently?

![]() Just happened to me today. All my fluid fell out the bottom. 103K miles on it, I can't be too mad I guess. Just going to buy another one and hope it doesn't happen again.
Edit: Not a clean break, but enough to cause a major loss of fluid I suppose. I'm assuming the little plate is not creased like this out of the box. http://i.imgur.com/O5Jd45K.jpg http://i.imgur.com/DD0C629.jpg Last edited by meebs; 05-26-2015 at 12:15 AM. Reason: images |

![]() Just happened today... I am curious what the cause.. is this just from poor material used... or stem from another issue? Like a failing slave just a thought, I already ordered a new master cylinder mine also leaked from the bottom and silver washer was damaged just wanted to know

![]() It's a part of life for a machine. Sorry, nothing lasts forever.
Replace it and move on unless you're an engineer. Buy a bunch and do some load testing on them and see what the standard deviation is for the life cycle of the part. Gather data and come to an analysis. I am sure Subaru did this and approved the design. You claim your car is a 2012, so you got 8 years from that part. Not too bad. |

![]() Had this happen on my 14, didn't think much of it and got a replacement from O Reilly, it lasted a month before it too was leaking fluid from the bottom where the snap ring holds the plate in.
I had kept the original broken part and pulled the bottom out. I tapped threads into the hole and locktited a set screw into it. What exactly is the purpose of the bottom cylinder? I assume it regulates pressure somehow through the tiny diameter hole. But I've never seen a master cylinder with this so I figured blocking it would work fine. It does. Although my clutch engagement feels like a Honda now. It's something else. And the trans glides right into gear like the day I bought the car. Honestly I forget this trans used to feel so smooth and modern. It's been like stirring up a box full of gravel with a wooden spoon for a long time now and I figured it was just getting older. Bypassing that bottom chamber makes it shift like it's a brand new car again. The engagement is weird though I can't feel it grab like I used to be able to. I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'm just happy this damn thing is done pissing dot3 all over my intercooler and trans. Anyone else who has their master fail in this manner, save your money and just plug up the hole in the bottom. |
