Default Noble M12 to the US

Racing fans and weekend skidders know the Noble supercar as one ofSouth Africa's finer exports. Now, Ohio-based 1g Racing has secured rights to sell the Noble M12 GTO-3R and M400 in the U.S.

The sales, though, will be chassis-only. The British-designed bodies, built in Port Elizabeth, South Africa , will be shipped without an engine or a transmission, as a component - albeit an assembled, painted, and upholstered one with brakes, suspension, wheels, and tires.

A number of independent houses are ready to fit powertrains to the car, 1g says in a release. Their Web site suggests the Duratec V-6 found in the Mazda6 might be a good fit - after turbocharging and other mods.

The outfit, near Cincinnati, can be found on the Web at www.1gracing.com.

Too fast for the speed limit in the USA? Every car is too fast.

I think an LS7 would be a nicer fit, personally. It'd be a shame to put a Ford-designed econo-v6 in a car like that, no matter what sort of FI you have in mind.

Quite a few years now. 02-03 they were over here IIRC.

And I don't even think you can get an M12 anymore. Thef irstwas an M12, then M12 3R etc. etc. There onto M400 now...

I agree I don't understand what's changed. I've seen the 1g stand at kitcar shows for at least several years now.

There's a reason why this car is LEGAL on US streets. There is a reason why this car is shipped over here complete minus engine and tranny, which is also known as turn-key minus in the kitcar industry. Because the car is shipped over without an engine and tranny, it's not really a running car and therefore doesn't have to go through all the federal BS that all the manufactures have to go through.

Once an owner buys the "kit" and installs an engine and tranny from a different company, then it becomes a kit car and has special exemptions for safety. There are even companies that exist that will jump through all the DMV hoops for you to get your vehicle registered. Some will even promise to get your "Cobra" kits registered as a classic and exempt you from emission tests, but I think that loophole might be closed now.

Power is power. It makes enough to blow the doors off of a lot of more expensive cars.

The exhaust note is the crappiest sounding thing on the planet however.

Don't let the economy car roots fool you, it's a great motor. The internals are changed to handle the added boost plus it has different set of cams. It's faster than a Z06 with this motor
Not sure an LS7 would fit transversely in the engine bay, it's a tight fit around the chassis rails
LS7 gets better fuel economy, so perhaps it is the econo-motor

I think 1G used to just be a DEALER for them. You ordered your car, and it came in assembled already. Maybe this is news in that you get a roller now, and you can put your own powertrain in it?

It certainly does not sound Ferrari good or anything, but I did not think it was terrible. Makes great boost blow off sounds when you shift. And besides, you can always change the exhaust. Unfortunately, I only got to drive it briefly.

The reason for the press release is that Noble plans to stop building them and move on to their new car. They have sold the production rights to build the car to 1G. So basically 1G can continue to build the cars even though Noble has stopped. 1G can now pursue making it US legal and not have it be a kit, but I imagine that is unlikely due to the cost fitting airbags, safety equipment and crash testing

here is the full release

Quote:
LEICESTERSHIRE, England — 1g Racing has secured the production rights to the British-designed Noble M12 and M400 supercars. The Ohio-based company will now be free to modify the cars for sale in the U.S.

Under the terms of the agreement, Noble retains the U.K. rights to the cars and also the use of the trademarks and names. 1g is required to rebadge and rename the cars by July 15.

The deal allows Noble to focus its resources on the development of the much-delayed M15, a rival to the Audi R8 and Porsche 911. Company founder Lee Noble said, "Our new model will be a big step forward and this will leave no room in our lineup for the M12/M400."

1g Racing is no stranger to the Noble brand. The company already had a deal to sell the M12 and M400 in kit form. To legally register the car in the U.S., customers were required to purchase a rolling chassis from 1g and then source the engine from elsewhere. The new deal will allow 1g to develop U.S. versions.

they do sound pretty bad IMO, 1G will never make the car US legal it will always be a kit car like you said thats just way to expensive. They could be really nice cars if you spent an extra 10k after the buying price to fix some of the slightly cheap parts on the car.

What cheap parts are you referring to? From what i've heard and read, the build quality is pretty good, especially for a kit car.

AGREED! haha man ever since i heard of this car i instantly fell in love. i tracked the American source down to 1G, unfortunately its a lot more then i would like and am able to afford at this time. Its such a bargain in the UK however, and this is one hell of a car according to the reviews, i have yet to touch one ...

One day i will own this kit car and have it legally driven around, this is one rare car i have yet to see traveling around so-cal, we seem to see all kinds of exotics... soon!

most of the crimps fall apart at some time or another, the intercooler isnt even close to big enough for the airflow the turbos put out, the ecu and tune is almost embarrasing, the fuel pump is run with 20g wires.... dont get me wrong its a VERY nice car for the money and will put a lot of cars over twice as expensive to shame, the bodywork and paint is the best i have ever seen but there are some minor details that need attention.

Noble Automotive has assigned manufacturing rights to the M12/400 series vehicle in the USA to 1g Racing. The assignment allows 1g, based in Hamilton, Ohio, to continue production of the vehicle which is still in demand in the USA and elsewhere.

Noble retains full rights to the car in the UK and control over the use of trademarks and naming.

Under terms of the agreement, 1g is required to re-badge and re-name the car by July 15th 2007, and is permitted to modify the vehicle to suit the needs of the 1g customer.

Company boss Lee Noble said: "The M12 has been a very successful model for Noble Automotive and we have learned much from it. Our new model will be a big step forward and this will leave no room in our line up for the M12/400 as we need to concentrate all of our attention on the development of our new model. However we will remain committed to all Noble owners, and will maintain the supply of all M12 and M400 parts for our owners and dealers."
This was the press release I read.

Personally, I'd rather have a Noble kit car than a 1G production car.

Why?

This is the exact same thing that happened with Brammo Motorsports and the Ariel Atom, and by all accounts, they improved on it. Same for the Lotus Super 7, Lotus sold the rights to Caterham and they have improved on it over the years.

1G WILL NOT improve on the noble, they are responsible for the majority of the problems the car has including lack of warranty support
