Default How-to: 02-04 WR to 05+ Center Console Upgrade

So all of us who HATE our bugeye or 04 center console, here is exactly how i put in the 06 sti (same as all 05+) center console while maintaining the manual HVAC for affodability. (notice i didnt put sticky due to lack of pics)

1. get all the parts together to avoid 10 trips to the dealer like me:

Upper AC vents w/ hazard switch
Radio Bezel from an 06 TR
Shifter Trim w/ Ashtray
Ebrake/Cupholder Trim
Main center Console W/ armrest
05+ ebrake handle (need to use 02-04 cable just bend a tab to remove it)
05+ main center console bracket (underneath armrest)
Radio Surround (the black part that surrounds the radio bezel actually part of the dash color scheme)
Metal center console reinforcement bracket
Metal radio mounting brackets from an 05+
- All this i got for about 340 dollars (some used some new from dealer)

2. Start by disassembling the 04 console. (20 minutes)
-Remove all components, leaving nothing but the dangling harness.
-This includes the metal bar that anchors the center console to two screws (one on the glove box one on the opposite side)and the two 12mm bolts
-Also remove the main center console bracket
-To remove the ebrake, disconnect the 7" ebrake cable from the two ebrake cables coming from the back and swap the 5" cable that is connected to the 04 ebrake. Just use pliers to pull up the metal tab

3. Install center console (20 minutes)
- Reinstall the metal brackets removed in step 2 first
- Install the 05+ radio brackets onto your radio
- Install ebrake, bolts into the metal bracket you just installed and another stud already there.
- Install the rest of the trim, simply bolts back into place

than your left with this...

heres a partial parts numbers list

66061fe010 center vents 1
66063fe010oe lower console panel 1
66063fe000oe lower console panel right 1
92178sa000 bracket for center console 1

What is the part number the the trim piece that goes around the radio and hvac controls? Im having trouble finding it on www.subarugenuineparts.com I can find the part using the search, but it does not specifiy if its the TR, WRX, or STI trim. And seeing as how the STI trim is different and wont work with my cable driven controls I don't want to order that one.

I am almost done with my swap. 05+ STi Door Cards and 05+ STi Center Console. Power mirrors were wired up today and work just fine. Get the male plug/pigtail from the 05+ door for the mirror switch. There are 7 wires and it uses the same colors as 02-04. Extend/trace the wires over to the center console plug (where the switch used to be connected) and done deal.

do you really need to change the armrest part of the centor console. I thought it was just the upper piece of the dash, the trims, and the lower shifter/ashtray part, and also the part that surrounds the e-brake handle

There is a "tri-pod" bracket underneath of the armrest and associated plastics that needs to be changed out to the 05+ model. The 05+ bracket needs to be modded slightly to fit into the rear guide for it to fit correctly, but it's simple with a hacksaw or cutoff/grinder wheel. IIRC, one of the bolts (driver's side) is not re-attached with the new bracket, so only 2 of the 3 are bolted down.

The "Metal center console reinforment bracket" is referring to a metal bracket behind the upright part of the center console, under the radio.

Can you expand on this at all? I have an 05 center console and right now it doesn't seem to sit flush with the bump for the tranny. Is this because of having the old bracket?

Also what do you mean by?
Radio Bezel from an 06 TR

Found the answer to second question Tuner ready... but dont have any idea of the part number...

Thanks.

Can you just use the Radio bezel from a regular impreza instead of an 06 TR? It is hard to find out exactly what I will be getting otherwise. Maybe the 03 bezel can be cut to fit though... I will be cutting it up anyway to put a LCD into it.

What'd you do about the mirror adjustment switch that used to be in the center console?
