2000 I think. I was one of the later one of my friends to get a cell phone. Most of them got the StarTac or the early Nokia's. I opted for the Ecrisson T28:

me too, when I got it I told them I didn't care about the first three but the last four digits had to be 2326 my nickname acquired in college. Makes the number easy to remember

Wasn't my first, but it was the first I liked. I had some real POSs.

Another surprisingly decent phone was the old sidekick. Crap battery life, but it was the first smartphone I had that actually handled the web and email decently. I only carried it as a second phone, no voice plan so it might have been horrible as a phone.

I think I've had this one 8 or 9 years; my previous number was a Florida one... got a different number after I moved when my contract came up for renewal.

I've had the same number since I first got a phone when I was 13 (2005), so over 6 years now. I had Nextel

Motorola i205

Then went to AT&T, now with Verizon, keeping the same number the whole way.

Since May 2004 when we moved to CLT from L.A.. The one before that had been the same since we finally got cell phones, about 2002, which isn't that long, but the landline we had at that time had been the same for 10 yrs.

I've had my new phone number for about three months now. I had to change it for personal reasons. Crazy ex wouldn't stop texting or calling me. He even tried contacting me through my Facebook, and still does after three months! Before I had it changed, I had my old phone number for about four years. Wish I didn't have to, it was easy to remember :-\

Oh, and the answer is about 8 years or so.
Can't you switch to a 0 Minute plan where you just pay per minute? I used to know guys who did that back in the day. Not sure if it's possible on the family plans though.

My contract is over next month though...but it won't matter, I have to either leave and have my wife on a single plan or stay on the family plan (which is already the cheapest family plan with Sprint $130 for 1500 minutes and unlimited text and data).

I was hoping that I could pay Sprint like $10 a month to keep my line though....I guess I have to call them and negotiate.
call and ask, worst that could happen is nothing will change.

I've had my cell # since at least 96-97, if not older. I got my first cell back in 94-95 and switched #'s with a buddy later on when he wanted out of his contract and mine was still active.

1999, I got my number for "emergencies only". My phone was something like this (with an optional antenna you could purchase separately to increase your signal):
