Post Uppipe Leak? Super Loud Whining/Screaming noise while in boost

I just installed an entire new cat-less exhaust system on my 02 WRX. DP, UP, muffler, and a new inner cooler rubber hose. The extra horsepower was amazing to feel when I took her out, but immediately the turbo area made an awful squeal after spooling up. Every time it happens right after the turbo spools around 3 rpm. The UP is flexible and I installed OEM gaskets, not copper. Also, the parts dealer gave me the wrong gasket for the bottom of the UP so at the last minute, I decided to use the old OEM gasket. It wasn't ripped up or anything but.... I dabbed some gasket sealer on and hoped for the best. I'm pretty sure I have a leak now but not exactly certain that is the exact issue. I'm not looking forward to tearing it back apart and was hoping for a way to identify the exact leak source before continuing. I read that some people use sea foam but was looking for a couple other options.

Plus, the sound did not subside even after a 40 minute drive.

Soapy water on a cold exhaust might help find it.

Do you smell exhaust while sitting still? If so, it's a fair bet that it's where you used the OEM gasket instead of a new one. That's what happened to me a couple weeks ago when I installed my uppipe.

Now, I'm pretty sure my issue is not a leak but the symptoms are similar with the loud screaching as soon as I give it some thottle but daily driving to work and back it's fine. I have more symptoms such as smoking at the autox but not on the street. Mine isn't an exhaust leak I'm pretty sure, mine is a dying turbo; has to be. I took it to a fellow subaru owner who's owned and built turbos all his driving life and he said, "oh, that sounds like the old GTI turbos", but was unable to diagnose it w/o taking off the dp to check for shaft play.

Sorry to go off, I'm just upset at the timing of my issue with a big divisional event coming up in a couple of weeks.

Good luck with yours...

Worth a try; just hope its enough of a leak when idling to show some bubbles. I don't like spooling the turbo when on the lift cause it revs too high. But I may have no other choice. And I haven't chance the Cobb stage to 2 yet cause I can't find my adapter , so I get a slight backfire when I do that.

Sounds like what I went through not too long ago. While cold you can usually use your hand to feel around for a leak. I just looked and found the lower part of my uppipe was not sealing.

def a boost leak i had the same problem. check intercooler hoses and clamps and bypass valve. The problem with mine, was that the intercooler gaskets tore and eventually gave. And is it quite easy to cross thread the intercooler. hope this helps

Does it sound somewhat like a super charger whine when you boost?

No, it's much louder and more of a squeak. I'm sure it's a leak that really blares when enough pressure is built up. I'm going to get it up on the lift again and do a more thorough inspection to see if I can feel or see any signs of air flow.

I actually did cross thread one of the intercooler hose connections (I had been so rough with the UP and DP that I forgot the intercooler was aluminum). I was pissed that it happened and was hoping that I could get away with fixing it later...in a few weeks when I move on to replace the belt, brake lines and shocks. I needed to drive it to work today so I just left it as is. Any idea why a leaky seal in the intercooler would make such a loud noise?

My friend had a extreamly loud squeal/whining...u could hear it from down the street...it was an exhaust leak between the turbo to downpipe...new gasket fixed it and the squeal went away

See, that's what my original problem was and my sound is very similar but just not quite the same. I'm hoping that it's the same thing this time but my gut tells me otherwise with the smoking of the turbo area coming off the autocross course; and I'm not really smelling any exhaust which is different than last time as well...

Definitely an uppipe leak. Most common is the uppipe to manifold. Throw it on a lift and spray some soapy water at it. I reused my stock gaskets, but only had about 10,000 miles on them.

Yup, definitely a leak. I drove around with my car like this for a YEAR because I thought it was the turbo I had put on... nope, forgot to tighten the manifold to uppipe bolts. Man did I feel like an idiot when I found that.

that banshee noise is (my bet) an Uppipe gasket not sealing right. My friend's 04 WRX had the same banshee shriek on boost

Ok if it was a leak wouldn't it be occuring all the time (while in boost that is)?

Yesterday on the way home from work it didn't do it at first, it wasn't until I was almost home before it started doing it. And today on the way in, it never did it at all...bah, confusing!
