looking for winter performance tire. I'm in a debate on just using one pair of wheels the whole year, and switching out summer/winter tires. However, they're 18x10's. I've seen the difference of opinions on a wide tire in winter but still can't decide what is best. I will spend more time driving on the road in cold rain, very rarely ice, and occasionally snow if up on the mountain. I figure a winter performance will be best since the car is a DD. Would love to get some opinions on this one!

Im not sure what type of performance you are looking for in winter, but I was helped here about a month ago. I was looking for safety in Eastern Oregon. Ice, snow, etc... while we are here in the winter months. Ended up with Nokian studded tires for our 2015 outback. So far felt little snow to speak of, but one can drive up to higher elevation in about 20 minutes where there is ice and snow. Tried these tires a few times and I can't believe the performance. It is like driving on dry roads. I'm sure with more snow it will get harder but so far my jaw is dropped. Good luck, there are some very helpful people here who have great suggestions.

Thank you for the insight. Studded tires would be a bit unrealistic for my purposes I think, since I am a bit of a drive from some real elevation and only go up occasionally (plus there's always the option for chains). I'm more concerned about regular driving in the cold/rain on the road, with the occasional driving on snow and and less on ice (though we do get black ice occasionally).

I have the Nokian Hakka R on the list to check out, but still in that big debate on running on a wide wheel in winter

PS: few days ago I happened to see a video about Toyo and Nokian who introduced All Weather Tires. May want to look into those.

Yes, a performance winter is what you want. Arguably the best one on the planet is the Continental TS860, but is not available in the USA. Look at the ones from Dunlop, Pirelli and Michelin.

Some more ideas here:

The R2 will not be good on wet roads. Nokian is more willing than other manufacturers to sacrifice wet traction for better ice traction.

I’m running a Cooper wsc sa2 performance winter in 245/45r17 on a 9” wide wheel that i got a deal on. So far i really like the handling in the rain and sort of (30 degrees F) cold. Just moved from Pittsburgh to the mountains in western North Carolina and finally got to drive some of these fabulous roads. Although the temps have been way above what I’ve been used to up north, the car handles the curves at a brisk pace very well and nowhere near as squirmy as the Blizzak WS60 tires I had last year or the Yokohama Ice Guards on my wife’s GTI. So far I’m loving not being on skinny pure winters, no snow yet though but I’m pretty sure I’ll be fine for where I am.

You may have second thoughts when driving on snow or ice but in 99% of winter driving winter performance tires beat studless and all seasons. Not to mention summer tires.
My wife had problems climbing hills in central Massachusetts with Dunlop WinterSport 3D but she is happy with Michelin X-Ice Xi3. That on Volvo S40.

Just my 2 cents from Vancouver, no snow yet but I am very happy with my Michelin PA4’s. In the dry they seriously feel like the stock summers. I’ve had Hankook Icept before which we’re supposed to be a more affordable performance tires, and they are not even comparable. Don’t know how they’ll handle the bad stuff, but we don’t get much out here, and the Hankooks weren’t that great in the snow anyways.
Perfect for pacific nw!

I have the pa4’s as well. They do feel good in the dry but definitely not as responsive as the summers. Much better then previous winter tires ive had though.

I found a set of 225/55R18 winter rubber for free. I just need to buy wheels for them.

Will they fit my WRX?

I think you need different vehicle for your free winter tires.

Blah, I never really liked my WinterSport 3D tires that much. Not that I have any right to complain about it now since I bought replacement 4D models last year...pushing 2x the hp and 2.5x the torque I did through the 3D tires these 4D in the same section width feel like trash. MD winters aren't bad, how squishy and sloppy could the X-Ice be in comparison?

Finally got some snow to drive around in.

These Coopers are great! I ran the tail of the dragon Tuesday on a dry 60 degree day and I was very impressed with the dry grip, this is my first ever set of performance winter tires. This morning I drove NC 209 (or as the locals call it the rattler) to Hot Springs and back. The road is no joke and in the snow it was even crazier, but besides me pushing limits the tires did great. I'd be happy with these tires if I were still in Pittsburgh, for down here they are a great choice. $46 per tire brand new is just icing on the cake.

$46 per new tire! Deal of the decade!

How did you make that happen?

I started looking at the end of the summer. Simple Tire had them for $46 and I jumped right then and there without doing much homework. They showed up at my house, the born on date wasn’t too old, and they looked good. I posted the deal in this thread when I got them and some pics of when they showed up. After today I’m thrilled, these roads in the Smokies are some of the best in the country and my tire and brake expenses will be going up so hopefully I can keep finding some deals.

I have Bridgestone Blizzak WS80s for the winter - 205/45/17 been using them for 3 years, super impressive tire!

I put the snows on last night but I'm debating leaving them on. I'm in LA and driving 6 hours into the mountains this weekend. Thing is, it's going to be 80 degrees when I leave LA and there is currently a 0% chance of snow any time within a week of me being in Mammoth. The highs up there are in the low 50s and the lows in the high 20s.

I'm not going to be driving at night except when we first arrive. Should I leave the snows on or can I put the Pilot Super Sports back on?

I kept my winter tires on one of my cars all summer. You'll be fine.

I have PSS's and just changed them out for the winter. Hit a little road ice here and there last week still on them -- they weren't bad.

But if there is the least chance of substantial ice or snow -- which there always is when traveling in the mountains -- you want your winters all the way. PSS's will not haul you around well in the snow, especially starting and stopping.

Yeah. It's just a bummer to drive 350 miles on squishy snows when there's not actually gonna be snow.
