There are four camshaft position sensors because of the boxer design:
All four are on the front of the engine, two on the left and two on the right. I believe the top sensors are the intake position sensors, and the bottom sensors are the exhaust position sensors, but don't quote me on that. If you look at the four red caps on the front of this (non-Subaru) boxer engine, it will give you an idea of where to look: Last edited by sgoldste01; 08-07-2013 at 07:26 PM. |

Oh, when I had changed my oil, I got a camshaft related code. P000b "slow response" I think. The sensors have to do with the variable valve timing and are oil powered. If you're engine oil is dirty, or wrong, or missing, or not flowing, the camshaft might not get into position as quickly as expected.
It happened right after I started my car after changing the oil. I don't know if it was just not enough oil in the right places after being drained, or what. But I checked everything twice after that, and all seemed normal. |

Would not the ultimate irony be that my car just dropped that code again? P000b Camshaft Position Slow Response.
FWIW, I am running Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20. Oil level is fine. This first happened about 2000 miles ago. Oddly, it came on at the same intersection in the same spot - starting from a slight hill. This hasn't happened on any other hill, so who knows. I called the dealer, and they can't see me until Tuesday, but they said it would not damage my car to continue driving it until then. |

Foghelmut, how many miles do you have on your car? Since it's a 2012, that tech bulletin just might apply to your situation.

Checked those connections and my oil yesterday, it was at normal level and nothing was loose. The only thing that I can think of being oil change relative is that they didn't put the black filter or my oil needs to change. They put on a blue filter which is for the Forester, but car runs smooth, i didn't bother to call them to verify why the black one wasn't use. Maybe that has to do with the code. Anyway, I'll go in and have an oil change next week, and i'll make sure they put on the correct one.

The black (Roki) filter is being discontinued. Subaru dealerships now default to the blue (Honeywell) filter.
While it's true that many people feel the black Roki filter is a better filter, I'm sure the blue filter is perfectly fine as long as you don't extend your Oil Change Interval (OCI) beyond what Subaru recommends. Therefore, your blue filter is fine, is the correct filter for your car according to Subaru, and is likely what you will get on your next oil change. When I heard that Subaru was discontinuing the Roki filter, I bought a batch of six and will work my way through them over the next 40k miles. After that, I will likely switch to the FRAM Ultra XG7317 filter, which is such an excellent filter that even people who despise FRAM agree that it's really good. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...Number=2695752 |

I also have the blue filter. I bought the same model that the dealership had put on.

So I got a call from the dealer, they're having me bring my car back next week so they can take the cams out and measure them. They're saying could be up to 2 days for a diagnosis, but they will be giving me a loaner vehicle.

I'll bring my car in this Thursday to fix that issue. Hopefully they won't take too long because my dealership have no loan car. Thank god I have my old car for backup.

I went to the dealer to drop off my car today, and ended up not doing that. I've put about 800 miles on it since the light first came on. The light has not returned.
Speaking with the service manager and a tech, the error code basically means that the camshaft sprocket is not in the position where the sensor expects it to be. This could be due to a number of reasons - software glitch, bad sensor, bad camshaft sprocket. In the case of a bad sensor or bad sprocket, the code would continue to appear. Especially with a bad sprocket, there would be a noticeable lack of power and the engine would be running poorly. In my case, I had none of these additional symptoms. They recommended not opening the engine unless it's really necessary, which I somewhat agree with, whether or not they were trying to get out of doing work. They also said that no damage could occur to the engine from this. And most importantly, they said I would still be covered under warranty if I chose not to have the work done at this time. So I took my car and went to work. If it comes back, they're opening that thing up. |

After going back to the dealer several time, they finally fixed the error code P0019. It has nothing to do with the camshaft sensor. The dealership had to contact Subaru to get this fixed. They first updated the ECU and it didn't work. Ended up they had to replace the ECM PN#22765AE761. Part cost is $620. Thank god it was all under warranty and I got free oil change due to their delay.

and now I'm trying to locate this sensor, do you know where exactly this sensor is? I want to try to take it out and clean it. If anyone could help, I would really appreciate it. |
