shifter rattles...
First I would like to say "Yes, I have used the search button".
I didn't come back with any results - so maybe I do not have the right keywords for the search. I have my NA wagon for less than 3 months (it was brand new when I purchased) and I'm still getting use to the new vehicle. I noticed that when I'm going pass 4000 rpm, there's this noise coming from the shifter. I don't know if this is normal or something is actually rubbing. The noise is best described as if you have a metal ring on a metal rod and you try to wobble the rod...that's the sound I'm hearing. However, this noise is easily dampen if I apply weight onto my shifter. But once I lift my hand up I can hear it again. - so maybe it's a natural thing, I don't know. It's a distinctive ringing noise for sure - everyone in the car can hear it. Anyway, I just want to see everyone's opinion before to determine whether I should bring it to a shop. I went into the dealer a few weeks ago for something else and I didn't get much support - and telling me that it'll be X amount of shop time extra, etc, etc. even when I offer to have my first service with them.... Or am I being one of those minority who believes the warranty warrants everything..... ..even my car has less than 5000 kms at the time. Your feedbacks will be very much appreciated. Yours truly noob, D

unfortunately i don't know what it is.. i kept thinking it's my own problem. I had a similar situation in my del sol (my last car) but it was gone after a short shifter was installed.
i just thought something like this is normal - since the wagon is my 2nd 5 speed car.... |

I'd bring it to a dealership. Theres a very noticeable vibration from the shifter from all manual transmission Subarus...however, there shouldnt be a sound.
If it were me, I'd probably take apart the centre console and ensure theres nothing rubbing or touching under a little bit of wiggling (which may be experienced once you hit a load at about 4000rpm). But since its under warranty, I'd rather go straight to Subaru. Best of luck! |

i wouldn't mind going back to the dealers - i just didn't want to spend 80-100 bucks of shop time just so that they can drive around the block and tell me they didn't hear anything....
i had a nissan altima before and i had some other noise going on. they pretty much drove it around automall and come back and tell me everything is fine. obvioulsy it isn't... the noise was still there. after much btchin' many times to only find out that something was loose around my front suspension..but i didnt have to pay... the subaru dealer that i went to came on quite hard that everything has a cost to it... so much for the "we'll take care of you" before you purchase the car from them. |

Are you going to the same dealer you bought the car from? I would offer, more likely insist, to drive with the mechanic. This way there is no mis-understanding of the rattle.
As mentioned before, I would pop off the lower console and drive around to see what exactly could be happening before going back to the dealer. |
