Default The Hella SuperTone Thread

SuperTone, and "What are those things behind the grill," threads, are becoming the new "Why wont my lights turn off" thread.

What:
-Hella "SuperTone" horns. These come as a pair, 1 of each frequency. The most popular set are rated @ 118dB. There are also sets rated at 113dB. Formerly, the 118dB sets were "Made in Germany," and the 113dB sets were "Made in India." Now, I believe they are all "Made in India"

-Typical Twin setup:

-Typical Quad setup:

Why:
-They're loud. And the tone they make is obnoxious.
-Like Replica V-Limited Lips and painted headlights, they're the "in" thing on NASIOC. The NASIOC community has the highest Hella SuperTone usage per capita.

How:
-Mounting
--The SuperTones are supplied with flat brackets. In a typical installation, these are mounted to pre-existing holes in the core support with M6x1.0 Bolts and Nuts (Alternatively, 1/4-20 can be used), or to an existing bolt on the hood latch support.
--Custom Impreza Specific brackets are available. SubieMods makes one such bracket.
--Custom options have been done. Get creative.
--Have an aftermarket alarm? Really want to piss off a car theif? Mount a pair under the dash and wire it to your alarm's siren.

-Wiring
--On the SuperTones, the Copper Terminal is +12V. The Silver Terminal is Ground. The SuperTones are also supplied with a Relay. (Note the pin configuration on this relay is different from the Industry Standard. The numbering is the same, so pay attention to those if you're using it!)
---4 ways to do this.
----a. Remove original horns. Make extensions using 1/4" Male and Female spade connectors. Male end plugs into the original horn wiring. Female end plugs into the SuperTone's +12V terminal. Ground the SuperTone's Ground Terminal using a Female spade connector and a ring terminal.
----b. Remove original horns. Using a standard automotive 12V SPST relay (Like the one Hella provides...), wire as follows: (Pin 30 - Battery positive terminal. Make sure to fuse this with a 15A fuse) (Pin 85 - Connect to original horn wiring. Recommended way is using a Male-Female extension like in Option A) (Pin 86 - Ground) (Pin 87 - SuperTone's +12v terminal). Ground the SuperTones like in Option A
----c. Leave original horns. Create your wiring like Option B, but instead of the extension from the original horn wiring, use either a wire tap or make a Y on that extension to plug into the original horn.
----d. Purchase a wiring harness. Harnesses are available from IAG Performance, SubieMods, and other NASIOC vendors.

Where:
-As always, we recommend supporting our great Vendors here on NASIOC. Almost all of them stock the SuperTones. Pricing ranges from $55-70.

EDIT: Mods I wasnt sure if this should go here in the Interior/Exterior or the Newbie forum. Feel free to move/link as you see fit. Thanks

love mine.
they really add a bit of contrast behind a normally bland grill and can be painted or powdercoated to add a bit of customization on a car

Thanks for the contribution. Have you seen the no less than 5 threads in this forum and the Newbie forum this week alone? Not to mention it gets asked in every other thread that has a picture with SuperTones?

had my pair sitting in my room for too long. i really need to put them in to bad its 20 degrees out and the garage is full of junk because we are finishing the basement.
They are some of the loudest horns ive seen that don't need an air compressor, that being said they are nothing compared to my friends truck with two train horns on it. If the noise from those dosent wake you up idk what will.

if you want them to all go off at the same time, split the wire off 87 4 ways, in stead of 2. then ground all 4 of the horns. Its the same concept still.

A side note, it would be in your best interest to put an inline fuse holder for the wire coming off the battery and place in a 20amp fuse.

Also, the installation thread already exists in the Electrical forum..

One thing I noticed I had the inside of my relay corrode which prevented the horn from working.. if possible try to spring for some sealed relays.

And yeah put a inline fuse between the battery and 30.

yeah I gotta order the sealed one but worth the hassle of wondering if it's going to work or not.
