Default Rosetta@home : Screw searching for aliens, how about curing cancer

http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/

Basically like the SETI@home application. Your pc downloads some info and then runs in a screensaver mode while it calculates the data. Once complete it uploads to their servers. Distributed processing.

I think that I'll install it on a couple of my workstations tomorrow. I have some extra cpu power I can donate to a good cause.

For the pharmaceutical companies, it'll hurt them "if" a cure for cancer is "discovered". Billions of dollars are donated to the research. If the research isn't needed, they lose the funding.

The conspiracy theorist in me says that there is already a cure, but it's being withheld so major companies can make more money.

All cancer will likely never be cured. Every single cancer is different. Biology will find a way to kill us.

But studying protein folding is a good start.

why does it matter what team you are on? It doesn't affect the work rate or the results.

Not really, cancer is a genetic mutation that causes a cell to keep replicating. Search for apoptosis, senescence and telomere / telomerase.

Welcome to 7 years ago.

I've been running THINK since 2000. It tries to find positive interactions for potential drugs with proteins associated with cancer growth.

I've got 2 years of computing time on FightAids@home, in about 6 months. Far more people have aids than cancer.

No more crack for you. 1/3 people get cancer.

I can almost guarantee that I will never get AIDS.

uh, no. not even close.

Not to mention, you can almost make it certain that you never get aids by following some simple steps, whereas cancer is prolific even in some of the healthiest people.

Either way, the biggest difference I see is that this Project hasn't anything to show for their research yet. And Fightaids@home has found several candidates that they are testing.
