fram oil filters for our ej20s?
i LOVE the fram oil filters with the "sure grip" or whatever you call it. i used the exclusively for my 01 rs as they were a snap to get off.
i did my 1st oil change a bit back, and no one had any fram oil filters of any kind for our blocks. im guessing they dont make them for our cars? i always use mobil 1 oil, so i guess ill just switch over and use their oil filter as well.

^SOA must have told Fram (Honeywell) don't bother cause we don't want any broken engines.

please, broken engine from an oil filter? OMG. . . .
I used the frams on my legacy for about 150K, no worries. I used dino in that car and changed it every 3K. In my rex I use syn and change it every 6-8K, changing the filter every 3-4K. There a 100 differnet oils and a 100 different filters, and if changed at the right frequency they will all do pretty the same job. Now lots of people will jump on here and qoute all kinds of things like the spring tension is sepcific to our car, you HAVE to the ones from the dealer blah blah blah. Show me an engine that has failed due to an oil filter. . . I have my oil tested at every other oil change by blackstone, and they show nothing but promising long health engine life. I use the cheap bosch (non premium bosch, got a good price on a dozen) filters FWIW (and RP oil). |

^ a broken engine may be is exaggerated, but the regular Frams are junk.
honda has fram and filtech make filters for the US market. believe me you can tell the difference in qaulity. even with the fram honda filter you can see that one is better than a regular fram filter. |

I was scared by everyone here years ago about how awful Fram oil filters were and at the time I blieved it. I still have a mental block against using them and just stick to OEM, I don't have to worry.
But really, I think that they are probably fine and would use one if it was all I could get. Like someone else said, show me an engine that died because of an oil filter. Indifferent maintenance upkeep is the thing that you need to worry about. |

I have always used the plain old fram filters. I put 285k on a chevy blazer and used nothing but fram filters. I have cut many of them open because I heard of them being stuffed with newspaper and whatnot, but it looked the same as any other oil filter. I use fram on my subie for 48k and it is fine.

Most members here will remind you that they are NOT stuffed with newspaper. They are stuffed with toilet paper. The kind you had in school. |

You have to realize that Fram makes oil filters for 1,000's of different cars. The same technology is probably used in all of them. I'm not saying they are bad, but an OE filter from Subaru was designed specifically for Subarus.

honestly i have never heard of any problems stemming from a fram filter. I have read about the cheap internal construction and i have used honda filters (us and cananda made) and Frams before. i have seen what seems to be cheap construction on the outside and would tend to believe they are cheap inside too. imo, given the price difference of a about $2.50 it's not worth the risk on a car that you care about and spend lots of money on modding.

I've read many bad things about the construction of Fram oil filters. I've seen pics of cut-open Fram filters that showed a failure of the filter material (you'd never know unless you cut the filter open to inspect it). When the OEM oil filter is so good, I fail to see why anyone would ever use a Fram on their Subaru. My $0.02
