Default Southbridge?

I'm looking at a house in Southbridge but I don't know the area very well. Any of you from there or familiar with the area? I've found some less than stellar things written about it online, but the reviews seem to be coming from rich and/or sheltered people in smaller towns.

The house is on a dead end street that seems pretty quiet...

Thanks!

I grew up in Sturbridge and my dad works in southbridge. It has a few nice neighborhoods but for the most part it's pretty much a slum. It looks like a nice city if you just drive through Main Street but if you spend any time there you'll see it doesn't have much going for it. Lots if low income triple decker housing and all the drugs/pregnant teenagers that comes with it. If you can avoid these neighborhoods it wouldn't be a bad place to live, there are some nice bars and restaurants around.

Thanks for the input. I really liked the house but the reviews online definitely have me apprehensive. That said, the house is at the end of a dead end, seemingly quiet road. Part of what I liked was how private the house seemed as it's up on a hill and half surrounded by woods.

Is the crime isolated? I've lived in both New Haven and many parts of Boston which both have somewhat bad reps. I found however though that the bad areas were kind of separate.

Horrorbiz: I do a lot of work in Southbridge and although its far from the worst city, it's prob not a place I'd but a house in. Although where we live (Uxbridge/Millville) there's plenty of slummy areas too. I'd say if its off the beaten path (away from Main Street) I'd say its def worth pursuing if the price is right.

Thanks, I appreciate the input! The house is about a mile from main st. When I looked at the house it seemed like a nice small, quiet neighborhood, I never would have thought Southbridge was bad, haha. I'm going to take a drive over again and check the surrounding areas a bit closer. It's just hard to tell sometimes. If I was just going to be renting I wouldn't be so concerned. I have to keep reminding myself that I lived in Dorchester and thought it was fine, haha.

I'd never buy a house there, but I'd consider it if the price was right. I'm talking 40k sq ft house with pool at LEAST!!! Otherwise.................RUN!!!!!!

Not just directed at the OP, but I've never really understood why anyone would choose to live in a crappy location. There are so many great places to live in every state. Why settle for a life you're not thrilled with? I'm being serious. You only get one life. Might as well enjoy it to the fullest.

Well, the house seemed like it was in a nice quiet area at first and the house itself was really nice and met all my requirements. We also need a house equidistant to Framingham and Hartford... Which doesn't leave too many options. We have some other houses lined up to check out in Leicester, Auburn and Oxford. Fingers-crossed.

I think that's a good call skipping it. My son took his road test in Southbridge (because our wonderful state has layed off most road test officers and reasonably close locations had 3 month waits) and we went out for him to practice. I looked for pawn shops the entire time we were driving around. Downtown has that kind of vibe.

Default Semi-Defense of Southbridge

Southbridge has some small city amenities and problems. There are good restaurants, and shops right in town. Houses are cheap but you will have a hard time selling it when you are ready to leave. Unfortunately the schools are not very good so I would be reluctant to raise a family there.

If you are single, MUST be in this part of MA, and willing to rent; I would choose Southbridge. If you have a family moving with you or must own; choose Charlton, Sturbridge, or, Auburn.

Thanks, that seems like solid advice. I ended up passing on the Southbridge house after checking out more of the immediate surrounding area. The good news is that I won't be raising a family in any of these places, no kids for me. I have plenty of nieces and nephews to visit with. It will just be me and the girlfriend. I am looking at houses in all the places you mentioned.

Grew up in Charlton and second this.
