06 WRX brake pads/lines
Is anyone else disappointed at the brake feel of their 06? I can definitely understand that it's going to be softer than a car with all steel braided lines and an aggressive high friction pad with sticky summer rubber, but even factory fresh, it still felt like sponge.
Anyone who rebled their stock rubber lines with low mileage feel any benefit? 06s are supposed to have the nicer Euro calipers so I figure brake feel due to more even torque would be better. My friend's 03 Wagon had just Metal Master pads (semi-aggressive street pad) and similarly crappy tires felt more responsive than the factory 06. What pads can you use for those calipers other than the factory ones which I suspect SUCK. I remember reading that Edmunds was disappointed by the crappy braking on the new 06 despite those calipers as well. Any aftermarket companies make pads for the 06s yet? Anyone who's swapped lines or pads on an 06, what kind of improvement did you feel? Our cars are pretty fast with a simple flash, intake, exhaust. The brakes are definitely not up to the same level of performance.

Try this first..
I'm about to upgrade fluid, lines and pads. The pads I'm going with are the Hawk HPS made for a late model 300Z. They fit the stock 06 brakes and I believe Hawk has their site updated with the right part # but I can't remember them right off the bat.
As for lines, any lines designed for the WRX from 02+ should work. Try searching "hawk", "hps" & "300Z". I know it sounds strange but trust me . Hope that helps. |

Better pads will do it. HPS or Bobcats for a moderate boost HP+ for a BIG JUMP - (with a little squeal and dust) No other brake mod will yield thos etypees of results. |

And just to keep your info straight. Your front "euro" 4-pots have LESS torque than the older 2-pots (but thats not a bad thing). |

The euro calipers have less _initial_ torque? I guess I can understand initial torque if the master cylinder remained unchanged. I don't think max torque really matters as traction would be the limiting factor on braking performance anywho. That slower brake reaction probably adds a few feet of distance to stops... or does the EBD make up for that? Less initial torque accounts for my feelings in comparison to my friend's wagon even before he swapped to better pads. Like I mentioned, at least the torque is theoretically more even, though in real life, I figure it mostly affects brake feel. |

Hawk Blacks are race pads - not the same as HPS or HP+
The Sumitomo 4 pots have slightly smaller pistons then the previous USDM 2 pots - plus your rear rotors are bigger (290 vs 277) So bias should go rearward slightly as compared to 02-05. A good thing overall. And I do think better pads produce better feel. The stock pads felt like mush - push harder and nothing happened - they just started to smell after a while. HPS are not high friction pads at all - but they are linear and progressive. They are pretty dust free and don't tear up rotors either. HP+ will wake it right up - but you will have some increased dust - wear and noise - imo a very acceptable tradeoff for the performance. |

But no, it is not just initial torque, the 4-pots simply don't clamp as hard as teh 2-pots (smaller pistons), about 12% less brake torque IIRC. Again, it doesn't matter as there's still plenty to overcome available traction, and the rearward bias shift is a good thing too, as your rear tires have some grip to spare. |
