Default MapDCCD vs DCCDPro

Hi all,

I'll be doing a 4EAT -> 6 speed swap very soon on my Forester. Been looking at DCCD controllers and came across map dccd and dccd pro. From what I've seen, it seems like dccd pro is more common but you need to wire your button, diff position (if not using STI cluster) compared to map dccd that has a controller box for you.

Curious what people think about both of them and pros/crons. Personally, DCCD Pro claims they have some sort of smart algorithm which sounds appealing. At the same time, map dccd sounds appealing because it already has a box module and don't need to worry about swapping a STI cluster.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

I went with DCCD pro when I did my swap, never had a problem with it. It was really easy to wire up even to get the full functionality on the cluster to work. I ended up tossing the cheesy control knobs on it and found a part out where I had someone snip the male pigtails for the two factory dccd control knobs and the 6 pin for the transmission to wire up to the unit, it came out very clean. For the cluster, I bought a junk instrumentation loom and salvaged the pins from the harness and basically soldered them to the DCCDpro computer and inserted them into the green harness that plugs into the cluster into their corresponding pinouts.

There are two tables here which show how the unit is wired up to the cluster, also detailed instructions are included on DCCDpro website.

DCCDpro firmware uses advanced learning formulas versus static mapping or lookup tables like the factory DCCD system. So it is better over stock.

This is entirely subjective. You are comparing the R&D budget/capabilities of a tiny company compared to Fuji Heavy Industries. Without actually knowing the algorithm, you're completely guessing at which is 'better'.

It is my opinion that MapDCCD is the better aftermarket product - the intuitiven nature of the GUI alone is a huge selling point. Most motorsport DCCD controllers (MoTeC, Pectel, GEMS) don't even have interfaces that are this good.

I agree with the subjective bit. That algorithm bit is the only reason I'm even considering it. But, MapDCCD looks way better all around otherwise. Just wanted to get what other people thought.

I think both are great controllers and either of them would work for the "majority" of users. Either of them are better than no controller at all (6MT swaps). "Most" with the OEM DCCD control probably would not notice the change if they bypassed and ran one of these. I have run both of them and would select based on what was available when I needed it. DCCDPro will ship out of the US. MapDCCD will ship out of New Zealand. Both have good build quality and excellent customer support. People vastly over-complicate this choice in my opinion.
If you are asking on a forum instead of deciding individually, then I'd recommend DCCDPro.

DCCDPro Universal if you want more of a set and forget controller. Most users run in auto mode the majority of the time anyways. Just install the controller and go. I guess I'm less concerned about a better algorithm just so long as it works. There are enough DCCDPro users out there to prove it works fine. I think people cry too much about the plastic enclosure they use. So what? It works and it does not need to look pretty when it's mounted behind your dash/console. The only thing I wish they added was a harness disconnect right at the box (although it would add a potential failure point). I'd recommend the OEM switches, at very least the roller switch. I also recommend ordering with the cluster lamp feature even if you do not plan to use it (you might later).

MapDCCD if you absolutely must tinker with settings. As noted, having too many adjustments can become a potential pitfall to many. Same as not knowing the DCCDPro algorithm...if you don't know what the MapDCCD adjustments do them you're no better off. That said, the few able to take advantage of those dials might save some dough over going to a more expensive option which the OP is not asking about. Their enclosure is very nice and the harnessing is great...but it's likely going to be mounted out of sight. The OEM roller switch can be used but the OEM manual switch cannot. I also recommend ordering with the cluster lamp feature even if you do not plan to use it (you might later). MapDCCD would work equally well as a set and forget once you load in an appropriate map and go.

Good luck.

Claims is all DCCDPRO has. Theres plenty of info out there. Ive used both in my own cars and have installed more of both then Id care to admit.

MapDCCD also has an algorithm based auto mode, they just dont make a song and dance about it. It works really well, but the maps are better as there is more control applied and it is done consistently (=predictable behavior). Even the free base maps that come with the controller are excellent and dont need to be touched unless you're aiming to do something specific for control.

The auto/manual switch and thumbwheel are both supported in the latest mapdccd firmware.

And the latest dash light cluster driver shows both mode and lock on the dash lights, so there's no reason to keep the controller in sight if you want to hide it away somewhere.

You don't need the switches though right? You can just use the knobs on mapdccd, correct?

Thanks!

Thanks and thanks everyone as well. I'll probably be going with map dccd. I like the module box just being more plug-n-play. I highly doubt I'll mess around with custom settings but plug-n-play is attractive.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the input. It's been awhile since I last played around with that controller.

Were you happy that you went with this choice? I am in the same boat right now and leaning toward MAPDCCD because I want to be able to match it to their four wheel speed sensor for more advanced traction control.

I've been running MapDCCD with the Advanced controller for about 2 years now. maybe more?? Install was a bit more complex as I had to tap quite a few more wires than you do with DCCD Pro.. Yet the customization of the Maps is amazing with MapDCCD and their customer support is also great (don't let being in New Zealand fool you, I had the harness tear on me (user install error.. if it doesn't pull freely, don't pull it.. damn it) and they promptly sent me a new harness (2 day delivery) harness was free, paid 15 bucks for shipping is all. They baby stepped and hand held me through my install process (free of charge ;-))

once you figure it out, tuning is quite fun! My WRX to STI swap and use of plated LSD's was really enhanced by adding some control to it.

Excellent. This is exactly the kind of thing I want to know. I am glad to hear it because I already ordered and received the advanced wheel speed processor.

I'll post updates.

Thanks!
