05 legacy GT STI swap
My brother got a legacy gt with a bad engine, turbo and everything and was thinking about an STI swap. Is there a thread on this? Do you need a lot of wiring work and etc. Done?

Is the Legacy GT auto or manual? I'm pretty sure PHATSuby went from an auto to a manual though, so that would eliminate a lot of the work and wiring harness splicing. Also, Ben is using a BE/BH Legacy, not the 4th gen Legacy (2005). I really don't think it would be that much depending on the donor car that you're harvesting from. But it's not as simple as dropping in a new motor.

After reading above it doesnt make sense. 2005 and up are turbo'd. There is no engine splicing. Swap to an STi block , fuel injectors , and turbo or rebuild current turbo. Get a tuner and good to go . As far as I know.

Why would you wast your time doing that when the it basically a STI engine replaced the stock engine and buy a STI turbo and injectors with the STI intake manifold and tune it. Same stuff just some minor difference.

The sti 2.5 bottom end is what u want. It won't break like the legacy 2.5 turbo block.

My sister has done the swap 05 lgt 5eat with 04 sti motor. You have to extend a few wires but other wise it runs fine. Running on stock lgt ecu

first off phatsuby has a 3rd gen car 00-04. You're talking about an 05 LGT, which is already turbocharged to begin with. Why do you want to do an STI motor and what are you goals?

The 05 and 06 legacy gt short block is the same as an Sti SB. The heads are the big difference between the legacy and the Sti. The are a bunch of threads on legacygt.com about doing a Sti manifold and intercooler swap. Kind of a waste now that they make aftermarket turbos and TMICs for the legacy.

A friend of mine did something similar to this. He bought a 2002 Impreza RS really cheap, bought a wrecked 05+ STI for cheap. Combined them, and he had a 2002 STi for half the price of a 05+ STI.

(Same part numbers) The diffrences that I have gathered are, diffrent up pipe, turbo, wastegate, intercooler, intake manifold, the airfilter intake, maybe the tgv's(but I don't think so) throttle body and some cooling and vacum line routeing under the intake, but the wiring harness on your lgt/obxt should be the same. The fuel rail might be a little diffirent, I do recall reading something about that, but I'm not positive. I tore down my obxt engine today, its all pretty fresh in my head. The intake on the lgt/obxt it plastic, logicly this means it will retain less heat, and since its moldedplastic my bet is it thinner and capable of flowing better than a sti intake. The Sti intercooler won't fit under the hood of a lgt/obxt with out modifing you scoop. All and all unless you just want to pop your hood and see Sti on your intercooler and a red intake, its really not worth all the work. With a d/p, turbo, intercooler and a tune you would be 300ish hp just as easyy as the "Sti engine" Last edited by Sneeky Pete; 03-13-2013 at 02:40 AM. |

Actually the 255 and 257 are not that similar. The only thing that is the same is the block itself. ervything is pretty much different. Different heads and internals. Sti top mount does fit under a LGT hood. You need to swap everything over to make it work . Its more work than just swapping out the TMIC but it does fit with no modification to the actual hood
