Blow out today in my 2 week old car
I just purchased my new 2004 2.5RS. I was driving on the Freeway (Highway 56 in San Diego) and all the sudden I see some piece of metal or something fly out from a truck tire next to me and it landed by my rear wheel and was then launched into my wheelwell. I heard several loud clanks and bangs. I slowed down to try and feel if anything was wrong with my car. I didn't notice anything until I was stopped at a light a mile away. My tire was flat, with 4 gashes in it, like a bear claw had gotten to it.
Put the spare on, made some calls, and it turns out no one has a RE92. My tire was unrepairable. the subaru dealers were anything but helpful. I finally found one about 30 mins away and they had to drive to another place to get it. So its now 6 hours later, and I have a new tire, but I am out 185 bucks. Does anyone else have trouble finding these tires in stock at thier local tireshops? Really pissed me off I am going to have my car checked out this week cause there are sratches and dents in the wheels wells now, but everything looks ok. I would have loved to get new tires all around cause the RE92's suck, but I don't have the funds. It hurts to spend 185 bucks on one RE92 tire. -Jeff

I think it might've been possible to spend $185 for 4 new tires that are better than the RE92.

Thats really bad luck. I hate it when things damage your car when its beyond your control to prevent it. I know its probably too late but you should have tried to get the license plate of the truck. I'm sure they would have to pay for it.
I had a golf ball hit my right front fender and put a big dent in it. Even the dent repair guys couldn't get it out so now its a trip to the panel beater and it aint easy to try to match my pearl white paint job. This is an imported Outback H6 so the original paint job is superb, so I hope they can match it. |

The RE-92's aren't the best tires on the planet, and that's probably part of the reason you had a hard time finding them. Situations like yours are pretty rare, so they figure 'why stock a tire no one will buy?'
That said, it sucks that you had to go to so much trouble. Crap on the highway bashed the hell out of my passenger door. That wasn't cheap. |

Uh oh. I had a blow out yesterday in my 04 WRX. I took it to a local Subaru dealer and they said they weren't licensed by Firestone so I had to take it to one of their stores.
I take the wheel to the Firestone and the manager tells me immediatly the tire was cut (still not buying that though, there was no other damage anywhere) and they would not warranty. I take it to another Firestone place and they told me the same thing. But, they did say that because my tire still had 90% of the tread they would prorate a new tire. So I get a $180 tire for $18 plus the mount and balance. I just have to wait til Thursday to get one delivered. I'm still ticked but it is hard to be too upset over $30-$40 bucks It looks like you got screwed. |

Wow, looks like I got screwed too. I picked up a piece of glass the size of a Coke bottle bottom 3 days after I picked my WRX up. It was too huge to repair, and no one would warranty it. I also had a bitch of a time finding a RE92 (seems to be an issue of that tire in that size that people don't stock), and ended up paying about $170. I made a suggestion to the dealer I bought my WRX from to stock some, even 1 in house would be handy.

Thanks for the replies.
-I didnt even think about getting 4 new tires for 180 bucks. Is it possible to get better tires for under 200 bucks all around? -It wasn't the trucks fault. There was crap in the lane he was driving in and his tires happened to kick it up. -I never thought about having it prorated against a new tire. it had nothing to do with teh design or the performance of the tire, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems like you lucked out. Why would they give you a new tire, but keep your old one that is unrepairable? Doesn't make sense to me. Anyways, I envy you this tire is almost 1 months payment. -Jeff |

You can get 4 Kumho 712's for 250 with hazard warranty from tirerack.com. Paging [email protected]?? Hazard is 30 bucks, 220 w/o it. The 712's are decent, but extremely better than the RE92's. Anythingis better...heh.

The 712's would be fine in San Diego as long as you don't plan on driving to Mammoth or anywhere else it snows - they are not all seasons.

For the future,
There is usually someone trying to get rid of the RE-92's somewhere on this site. If you're not looking to get new tires anytime soon, it might be helpful to buy a couple of used ones from the site here and hold on to them if you have the room to store them. |

Uh yeah, that really sux that you had to pay so much for the re92. However don't beleive that you could get 4 new tires that are better than those for $185 or even $250. For a good set of new tires, you should be looking to spend around $600 for all four tires. Remember, you get what you pay for. Also, why does everyone say the re92's sux so much. I know there not the greatest tire in the world, but I don't think they sux as much as every subaru driver makes them out to be. Sure they make a little bit of nise when pushed really hard, but nothing too bad. I maen for a stock tire, they're really aren't that bad, and I've driven WRX's with different tires, and yeah they performed a little better, but it wasn't mind blowing or anything. Thats just MHO

I was a defender of the RE92s for a long time mainly because I didn't want to fork up the cash to replace them early. When I added some tire pressure they got a little better. But now that I have replaced them (Dunlop sp5000s) I realize just how bad they were, especially in the rain. It is just wrong that Imprezas come with this tire because they don't do the car justice. What is the point of having AWD if I am more afraid to drive the car in rain then other 2wd car with better stock tires? They suck, the only good thing about them is that I learned to be very carefull driving my car in the rain (and in dry).
Jeff - regardless of the cost it was a good opportunity to get 4 new better tires. I spent over $600 on my tires an I wish I had done it the second day I owned the car. |

It think it would have been easier to fork over $250 and get a set someone was selling with rims, and then save those for spares or sell them to make ur money back.

I would have loved to get a better deal on the tire here on the site or buy a new set, but I work fulltime and goto school fulltime at night, and i just dont have the time to try and get the best deal on a RE92. I needed a tire and I needed it right away. I also didnt have more the 200bucks to spend. But I can't wait till the day I can get new tires if not wheels too.
I just wanted to get that donut off my car and get it back to working order. I drove by the same spot today on the highway and theres still crap on the road, but most of it has been kicked off to the shoulder. |
