Post 2.0, 2.2, 2.5

Just wondering why SOJ uses the 2.0 and the 2.2 for there turbo models. But we get a 2.5 with out a turbo. Wouldn't it be smarter to use a larger liter engine for a turbo than a smaller...

And yes i have searched but i've come up with articles on the 2.0 and 2.2 nothing on the 2.5...

Yes, there is truth in the saying "no replacement for displacement" so a larger engine w/ a turbo could output more than a smaller turbo engine(all other things being equal), but since the governing bodies of motorsports have restrictions and the WRC doesn't allow anything over 2.0L turbocharged, that's what subaru builds. The 2.2L was an attempt to make the car more drivable on the street because it gives you a broader torque curve. The 2.5L is basically a bored and stroked 2.2L. This also makes it less suitable as a turbo because it is weaker, has a higher compression ratio and therefore can't run as much boost... of course, there are always ways around that... =)

The WRC restriction of 2.0L happened in the mid-90s, previously it was 2.2L and didn't *have* to be a four cylinder (e.g. Audi 2.2L inline 5). This is why the Legacy Turbo was 2.2L.

Besides racing, the other reason is that cars are taxed on displacement in Japan and many portions of Europe.

The 2.0 GT/WRX is sold in europe where engines over 2.0 litres are taxed higher in some countries. That might be one reason for the 2.0?

not sure what the weight differences
of a 2.0/2.2 verse 2.5 engine.

I would assume you want to balance the most effective weight of engine using a turbo verse the NA engine without a turbo.
Performance comparison I mean.

The weight differences between any displacement EJ series engine is just about insignificant.

The 2.5L is a , in my opinion, unplaned child of the EJ program. They spawned it to create a cheaper high torque motor for the US market. It was w/o a doubt cheaper and more profitiable than making the SVX motor go in the Legacy, and then try and keep the SVX sales up. The SVX motor was also a world more expensive than the EJ, so that is a factor.

I also don't think its anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be, for forced induction. No it will not be as good at makign RPMS as the EJ-20, and the walls are a little thinner. However, I still am waiting for someone to prove the opendeck block on ANY subaru motor caused a engine falilure. which is different than they got detonation and hammered the rod through the cyl wall, melted a piston, over reved, etc.
