Phoenix, AZ Nightlife/Activities?
I'll be in the Phoenix,AZ for the week of July 4th with a few friends for vacation just to get away from family, friends, jobs, etc. We will be visiting and staying with one of my buddies grandparents. We are all in our mid 20's and looking for stuff to do while were out there.
Anyone have any favorites spots they like going to or things they like doing while in the phoenix area? We all love outdoor activities and plan on doing a lot of bit of drinking while in the area. Anyone want to point me in the right direction?

Vegas is 4.5 hours away. That's always a great option.
If clubbing is your thing, I can't help you out there. I got that all out of my system in college, but you could roll around the Tempe area where the college scene is. Then there's always Westgate if you're just looking to hang out at some bars and possibly listen to some live music. |

There are tons of golf courses out here. Many very nice courses and on the cheap right now because summer rates. If you can stand the 110* heat then golf is always an option.
You could tube the salt river which is always a pretty good time. Old town Scottsdale is the place to go for night life if you are looking for clubs and what have you. Depending how long you are in AZ you could take a 3 hour drive to flagstaff or the white mountains and I'm sure you could find some kind of ATV rental in one of those areas and it wont be 110*. Just to name a few things... |

It's the area by the AZ Cardinals stadium and Jobing arena where the Phoenix Coyotes (hockey) play. They have restaurants, bars, and theaters.

When I want to go out and get a little crazy, I usually say "**** it" and just shut all the lights off and drink until I pass out alone in the dark. Saves untold amounts of money on cabs. It's also cooler in my house than it is out on the streets of Mill or Old Town.

If you guys like outdoor stuff visit the Grand Canyon on your way back from Vegas. There is a lot of hiking to do there and you can even do white water rafting there. Plus it's really beautiful.

For my answer to stay on topic (organized for your pleasure) -- - Drinking ---- Mill Ave between University and Rio Solado (Bars) ---- Old Town Scottsdale (Bars/Clubs) ---- Westgate in Glendale (bars n shiet) ---- Casino Arizona (if you like drinking/gambling with indians and old ladies. Which i do) - Outdoor Activites ---- Golfing (Course by ASU is nice. And all courses will probably have low summer prices as it is hot as SHIET outside) ---- Salt River Tubing (East of Phoenix but a great time if you have sun screen and a LOT of beer....make sure you have something to float your beers along with you) ---- Fireworks at Tempe Beach Park ---- The Monastery (Outdoor bar, volleyball, ping pong, horseshoes.. also has grills to grill the meat you buy there. Good times with a group) |

As a dumbass college dropout in my mid-20s I believe my input will be relevant here. I dont go outdoors until after 8PM for fear of my face catching fire spontaneously. However, at about that time there are several wonderful places to eat/drink/etc. Since I am a beer drinker, I will categorize my rec's by location and by types of beer offered.
In Tempe: Four Peaks (local microbrewery, probably the best in the state) Mellow Mushroom - more craftbrew and microbrew choices than you can count ON TAP and amazing pizza Daves Electric Brewpub - they make their own beer and its both cheap and delicious. If you are aiming to be particularly rowdy, they will do a yard of any of their craftbrewed beers Sleepy Dog Brewing - also make their own beer, fairly cheap - they do beer flights I believe In Scottsdale: Papago Brewery - micro/craftbrews, etc Sonora BrewCo - another great microbrewery, probably good food though Ive never eaten there In Phoenix: George and the Dragon - legit english pub, good food and great beer selection if you like imported beer on tap Tim Finnegans - legit irish pub, great food and good beer selection Bonus Recommendations: If you like a loud atmosphere and being rowdy, Big Bang in Tempe is the best dueling piano bar in the state, decent drinks. Im sure Im forgetting a bunch of crap, but whatever -- just use YELP and The New Times for more ideas, its all pretty good ****. |

Thanks guys, awesome suggestions. Looks like I'm def going to hit up the salt river. We have a lazy river up here that you hang out on with beer that's a lot of fun
The bars and places to chill at night sound like a blast too. Any particular area women like to chill and hangout? I've been to phoenix once before and the women around you are NOTHING like there are up here. Smoking hot girls down by asu |

for tubing, i highly suggest forgoing bringing any type of cooler (you have to pay extra for a tube for them, if you dont bring your own) and they inevitably end up getting dumped over, or cumbersome. Buy some mesh bags (like for laundry) and just have each person have their own tied to their own tube. Also, due to the sheer heat of the innertube, i suggest an extra towel to put over the tube so you dont melt your backsides to the tube should you move.
I would also suggest Sedona over the Grand Canyon. I found it very boring the one time i went =( it was cool the first 5mins, but then eh.. its the same view from 4 different positions =/ Perhaps hiking it is a much better experience. YMMV. If you enjoy Old Westerny stuff, check out Goldfield http://www.goldfieldghosttown.com/ i found it neat. |
