Well, Soccer isn't the most popular sport on NASIOC,
but their is a small community which likes to discuss
the world's most popular sport.

This thread will be open to any league or cup

W00t, I've been thinking about starting this thread for a while now. I think everyone that posts need to have a small introduction about who you follow and your all time favorites.

EPL: Arsenal (going to watch them versus Hull City this fall)
SPL: Celtic (went to Parkhead on my honeymoon)
La Liga: Barcelona (just because I've been there and I LOVE that city)
National: USA (obviously), France (most of my favorite players are french)
MLS: Fire (I <3 Chicago and saw them play AC Milan), Crew (most "local" team, saw them versus Aston Villa)

Favorite Current Players: Cesc Fabregas, Robbie Keane, Thierry Henry, Henrik Larsson, Frank Ribery (heaven forbid he join Chelsea)
Favorite Past Players: Roy Keane (I know, I know, he hates Arsenal, but the guy's drive was inspirational), Zinedine Zidane

Larsson and Henry will soon join the "past players" list.

Anyways, I'm pumped about the upcoming season. I'm hoping Celtic can retain the title after an amazing 07/08 campaign. I'm also hoping that Arsenal will maintain their early 07/08 form throughout the 08/09 season.

Liverpool here. It's tough to choose a favorite...there's obviously Stevie and El Niņo, but I absolutely love Danny Agger and Javier Mascherano...two very talented, young players. I'm still hoping to see Keane and Silva on their way to Anfield this summer.

As far as other leagues go, I'd have to choose Marseille in Ligue 1, RM in La Liga, and Roma in Serie A (but I don't have any real loyalties there).

Anyone think my reds can finally sustain a challenge for the title and bring home #19?

Not as if diving and players theatrics (sp?) aren't out of control right now, I feel they are the worst in Italy. It makes it next to impossible for me to watch a serie A game. I not a fanboi of any one league, although I do support Liverpool and my boy Stevie G.

Did you guys hear that the U.S. was one of the three associations Blatter contacted about possibly moving the 2010 world cup to? That would be awesome if we were to get another world cup in such a short amount of time. I was able to attend one game in 1994, Romania vs Argentina in which Hagi and Romania beat Ortega and Argentina 3-2 at the Rose Bowl with close to 100k watching. That was the first game of Maradona's suspension that world cup which made me pretty upset as I feel Maradona is the greatest footballer this world has ever seen.

Anyways, glad to be a part of the thread and can't wait for the upcoming seasons!!

I am for Liverpool also...with a soft spot for Man Utd....(just a little).

I think they can move up this year. I hope they sign Keane and Barry.

I am surprised so many of you like Serie A. I can't stand to watch it...but that's just me..

Lets see...

Arsenal got Nasri ( ) and lost Flamini and Hleb. We're likely to lose Adebayor as well. I'm hoping we get Arshavin from Zenit. Arsenal is supposedly in the running for Barry, though I don't know that they'll get him or even make a proper bid. We should have Eduardo back (hopefully as effective as he was prior to his horrific injury.

Celtic hasn't really lost anyone, but they never sign anyone high profile anyways. That is what happens when you have to play in the SPL. I guess the big signing is getting Samaras officially from Man City instead of just having him on loan. I have high hopes for Scott McDonald repeating last year's performance. Looks like we may lose Vennegoor of Hesselink to one of the Serie A teams.

Adebayor's dead to me. He's fantastic, but greedy.

Shev needs back in the Italian game. He's too expensive to be warming the bench in the EPL where he's been less than effective.

what do you think about celtic picking up samaras? when he first went to citeh, i thought he was a good pick-up. it's unfortunate that things never really worked out for him. although, it seems to be a recurring problem with many of their striker signings (bianchi, bojinov, even my boy robbie 'god' fowler to an extent).

it's nice to see someone else appreciates kuyt. he's the least selfish striker i've seen in a long time, which is to his detriment at times, but more often than not, it greatly benefits the team. he seems to really have reinvented himself on the right-wing (a position which isn't all too unfamiliar to him from his time in holland), and during euro2008, he almost seemed like a sort of right-midfield-winger-back. i swear to god, he covered every inch of grass on the right side of the pitch.

seeing as most of us are based in the states, has anyone had the opportunity to see any good footie matches in person? my only one to date was the opening international fixture at the new wembley last summer. england vs. brazil, 5th row, center of the pitch. even though it was a friendly and a relatively tame game, what an experience.

I'm taking my wife to London for a long weekend in late Sept for her birthday and the plan is to watch Arsenal v. Hull City. I figured them playing a basement dweller would be my best bet of getting tickets. www.bigsoccer.com has sub-forums for most of the major teams. For Arsenal, there is a member on there that specifically works with Arsenal to get tickets for people in the US. The bad part is that I won't know if I have tickets until 10 weeks prior to the match. So, who knows how this will turn out.

Now, if you are willing to watch an MLS team play someone, several of the Euro teams play against MLS teams here in the US. I've seen AC Milan and Aston Villa play live thanks to this. Barcelona is going to be in the US this month and next month. The only bad thing is that you tend to see a lot of reserves and neither team is really putting 100% on the pitch.
