Thumbs down My Macbook Pro could have burned my house down just now....

Mid-2012 Macbook Pro. Luckily, I had the charger sitting on the glass table while I was outside. It was sitting on the carpet, but moved it on the table so I wouldn't step on it later. I tend went was outside for an hour, and came in and smoke was coming out of the charger.

The ghost of Steve Jobs says buy a new 2014 MacBook ya cheap bastid.
Either follow as one of his thralls, or perish in flames.
Seriously though, scary. Glad it wasn't worse

Not really worth it. I would have been devastated about my house, since I poured my heart and soul into this place over the last five years.

I would have been ****ed if it started a fire. My car is locked in the garage downstairs, and my keys were sitting next to the laptop on the table.

Contact underwriter labs. Let them know that their approved stuff could've really sucked for them.

I never understood while people lock their cars in their garage. You still need the keys and if someone really wants it they're going to get it. I leave my keys in my car when its parked in the garage.

Thanks. I submitted a complaint on their site with three photos, including serial numbers and UL marking codes.

Because sitting inside dry at 50 degrees is better than getting in a car that is cold, or covered in snow and ice, etc... It was 12 degrees last night, would have sucked to get in a car that was that cold. 50 is quite a bit more tolerable than that.

That's backwards. They dropped the L-shape plug in favor of the T-shape plug. I actually prefer the L-shape, since it's less cable sticking straight out when using the laptop on a desk.

I always wrap at least a little bit of the cable around the prongs because that junction has only been known to fray/fail on about 7 million Apple power supplies. If you wrap the cable around it keeps the cable from being bent all around at crazy angles.

this exact thing happened to me in my dorm room 2 years ago. Same exact place in the cable. Luckily I walked in right as my blanket started to smolder. If i had come in 2 minutes later it would most likely have caught it on fire.

Apple do anything for you, or was it like... "oh here is a new magsafe adapter."

MagSafe ...

Honestly I just went to Apple and bought a new charger. For some reason I never really make warranty claims. Although in retrospect the email heading "charger set my bed on fire, would like free one" probably would have gotten me somewhere.

Taking it to apple, you'd get shrugged off, or "heres a new cord, sorry."

UL takes safety a bit more seriously... from what I heard.

A friends Xbox 1, the original from 2000 era, went up in smoke in pretty spectacular fashion. Called about a warranty claim, the operator was immediately like "oh this needs to be escalated, we will call you back shortly."
Five minutes later some really high up dude calls back and basically bribes us to bury the story. Free xboxes, games, swag. Totally worth being on hold for ten minutes.

They went T->L->T. The L was introduced for the MacBook Air because the T didn't fit.

I went through FIVE of those goddamn pieces of **** with my old MacBook. They all frayed and shorted out in that same manner at either the plug or the brick.

So far the MagSafe 2 in my rMBP is going strong but we'll see.
