I was at the auto show toady and they had a blue limited Ascent on display. This is a huge offering from Subaru in the Denver market. Unless you got there early you had to wait in line to get in it. My thoughts- Nice not as roomy as I thought but had a better feel and look inside and out than the Honda Pilot. Third room is tight for anybody close to 6ft tall. Seats where comfy but not anymore than the Outback touring on display. The seat extension for the driver is a very nice touch. IP was impreza/ crosstrek/19 Forester. Some cost cutting was obvious like the A- pillar covers are plastic unlike the cloth in the Outback and the leather on the drivers seat looked 5 years old as far as wear. Off course this could change for production models. Big roof and HVAC vents along the top in row 2 and 3. Overall very nice and should sell very well if the engine has some good performance loaded down. Also, if you don't need the room a 19 Outback with a 3.6 would be my choice

I still find it curious the top trim is offered in only 7-passenger config. I would think most families would want to seat 8.

That's the case for the Kia Sedona too. Top model SX-L has dual sunroofs, bigger wheels, and reclining captains chairs with footrests, but not 8th seat option. I had to step down to SX to get the 8-seat option.

That's fairly standard for mid-sized SUVs. Pathfinder and Explorer comes to mind. The higher trims typically get 2nd row captain seats, which eliminates the 7th seat. Larger SUVs go from 8 passenger to 7 passengers for the same thing.

It seems par for the course to only offer pilot seats on the top trim, though I thought originally Subaru stated that all trims would offer both.

I opted for the limited with 7 seats. It was tough choice. We have 3 kids in car seats, and would have liked the option to put all three in second row if needed, or have the extra seat just in case. However, with 60/40 split seating I would be down to 2 seats if I have longer items I need to put down the middle, since both 60 portions would need to be folded. I wish Subaru would have used 40/20/40 seating. This would give me the ability to get the 8 passenger, and still have enough seating by folding down the 20 portion to fit long items.

With the seats up, though, whoever sits in the 20 portion gets an uncomfortably narrow seat, like Highlander center seat. Passengers need 33 33 33 split, but few cars are wide enough to successfully accommodate. (Someone should make a 2nd row center seat armrest passthrough for the occasional long cargo items, IMHO.)

That's what I really like about my Sedona. The middle row on the 8-seat is basically 35/30/35. The middle seat cushion is almost identical to the side seats without the side bolsters. It really adds flexibility: I can remove the center cushion to provide walk-thru, or put it back in for an extra passenger. I really hope Subaru picks up on this idea, maybe for the next refresh.

Yeah, I've always thought that was great idea. In laws mini-van is like that too. The removable middle portion makes a ton of sense. Apparently that is reserved for vans only at this point. Not single Mid-size SUV has that option, which is a shame.
