Default Gas milage and fill-up

I have some questions on the legacy gas mileage and what happens to other people on fill-ups.

I get about 18 - 20 miles to the gallon on normal city driving, does anyone else get this low of a MPG.

Also when I go to fill-up at the gas station and my gauge is on "E". It always seems I only need between 9 - 11 gallons to fill-up the tank. In the manual it says that the tank holds 16 gallons.
Is this common or is my fuel gauge gone. I have had this car for almost 3 years and it has always been the same.

Thank you
Ron

The mileage thing, yes that's as good as I get, too.

The tank capacity thing, I have been suspicious of mine for a while too, but my suspicion is a result of my needle being on or near E and no low gas light coming on. I should just keep going until I run out sometime and see how many gallons go in.

Jim

edit: oops, apples and oranges to a degree. My turbo swallows a lot of gas, maybe others with something more like your car will have different numbers. At least our cars are similar age-wise.

Weird, i get more than that in my 90 legacy wagon AWD that has 135k+ miles.

At 78mph (the speed the car travels at 3k rpm) Im getting 22.5 mpg highway.

Usually I fill the tank brimming and dont fill up again until 260-305 when its around E.

Ive always been using chevron 91. My ignition system is currently stock, but the parts to upgrade it are slowly starting to pile up. It will be very soon when I hope to improve my mileage, or at least improve performance under hard accelleration.

on my 99 legacy, 20-27mpg... usually 20-22 city.. i also usually get ~250-300 before E light comes on, and i usually fill with 12 or so gallons.

Filled up yesterday at 306 miles and the gauge was just a hair above the "E" and it took 12.6 gallons to top it off (24.3 mpg). I usually see anywhere from 290-330 per tank running Texaco 87 in combined highway/city driving. Those figures are for the 98 GT 5spd. The 98 GT 4EAT, interestingly enough, pulls down about the same mileage per tank in mixed driving.

Ever since i swapped out my god-awful 4EAT, my mileage has increased 2-4MPG, so i get 21-23MPG and usually over 300 miles on about 14 gallons of gas, which is a lot better than what it used to be.

My gauge also reads low all the time...

You know, I have NEVER seen my low fuel light. Either the bulb is bad or whatever triggers it in the sender is not working. My guage is correct though. Any ideas?

The main reason is gas gauges are not accurate. After all there
is no real reason for them to be. As for the "miles per tank",
that means very little. If you want to find out your mileage,
fill up the tank full and record the miles. Now every time you
fill up, always fill it full and record the miles and gallons
to fill up. After a couple of fill ups, you can do the math of
miles driven to gallons used.

My overall mileage on MY99 2.5RS is 23.4 MPG. What I find funny
is that my wife's LL Bean H6 has been getting 25.2 MPG.

What I do is always pay with my credit card at the pump so I get a receipt. I write the mileage down on the back of the receipt and throw it in the center console. I probably have every receipt from when I bought the car in there, so I could track gas mileage based on each modification. The biggest jump in mileage was one mod with the following all done at once:

Synthetic differential fluid front and rear Mobil 70w-90
Synthetic ATF Redline
Tranny Cooler in parralel (largest hayden model)
New transmission (1995 impreza)
Switch to Mobil 15w40 synthetic motor oil

My 2002 GT gauge is dead on, but it is the first car I have had that is. I get about 22 in "suburban driving" and 27 or more on highway. Ganzflow, low weight crank pulley, DirectHits capacitive ignition system.

Rest assured there is a light, and i can trigger mine when the needle is over the E mark by taking a corner quickly

I just have a feeling of where i should fill it, usually it's right around 14 gallons when i fill it up, but i'm quite certain that the tank is 15-16 gallons.

Haven't run out yet...

I know there is a spot for the light, its a little square and its more orange than any of the other lights. Somewhere I had a picture of it.

You know whats crazy? In the 4wd version the gas returning from the fuel rail runs a pump in the tank that pushes gas over the hump! A completly mechanical pump.

All run Amsoil Synthetic, oil and transmission:

92 Legacy Wagon, 5spd. 2.2l:
Average Tank: 250miles (@11Gallons)
Average MPG Mixed: 22-25

97 Legacy Wagon, AT, 2.2l:
Average Tank: 300miles (@12Gallons)
Average MPG Mixed: 25-27
Best MPG recorded: 33MPG All Highway

01 Legacy Sedan, 5spd, 2.5l:
Average Tank: 400miles (@14Gallons)
Average MPG Mixed: 27-29

These are the average points at which the tanks are filled at E at the specified gallons above. The '01 is the most accurate, the 92 still has over 5 gallons on E. The '01 is easily the most powerful and the heaviest, yet gets the best milage on average.

The 97 AT gets into the 31-33 MPG range on long trips, it matches its MPG ratings pretty closely, the '01 exceeds its ratings and the 92' is well below its ratings.

The lights work on all three, but the 92's rarely comes on.

Well maybe bad gas milage is an Oregon thing. I bought mine when I lived in Portland.

I just put in a CAI and I'm hoping it'll go up a bit.

Angry Subaru Fuel Gauges and Tanks Suck

I did battle with my dealership over these exact fuel gauge and tank issues. They were never fully resolved; I had to fight with the dealership and SOA every step of the way, and to this day has never been fully resolved to my satisfaction.

The Subaru uses an unusual saddle shaped fuel tank configuration. This saddle shape allow the rear drive axel to pass just under the fuel tank. Because of the saddle the tank has two sets of sensor on each side of the saddle. I believe that the tank configurations and the way the sensors pick up the fuel level are the cause of most of these type of problems.

The fuel gauge in our '99 Legacy Wagon never reads consistently and rarely shows Full after a fuel fill up. The mileage per tank(~390mi) and the fuel light are the only indicaters we can use to judge when the vehicle needs fuel.

This vehicle also had a tendency to cause the gas station fuel pump to prematurely shut off when refueling. Because of this and the fuel gauge inaccuracies. It made it a problem to fuel the vehicle, because you never knew if it was actually full or not. This problem was partially resolved by replacing the fill tube to the fuel tank, which has a vent mounted to the fill tube.

I understand that fuel gauges in cars are not that accurate, but at least they should be consistent.

The dealership, Nate Wade Subaru:monkey: , SLC, lost my business over this and other issues with the same vehicle, and has made me question buying a Subaru in the future.:monkey:

Wow, on my turbosedan I only get 230-240 miles to a tank.....that doesn't even touch DLC's. I have a 5MT and drive fairly hard, so I don't know. However my fuel light WORKS......sometimes.

I checked my logs and did a quick median calculation and it looks like the 2.5's are averaging 22 in city and 29 highway. That includes the 2 98 GT's and 01 Forester S. The gas mileage on the Forester stinks and has since day 1 (17 city/22 highway). The 2.2L's (98 OBS and 99 Legacy 30th Anniv L Wagon) are averaging about 23 in city and 31 highway. That's spread across two 5 spds and three auto's

BTW - the Audi A6 Quattro apparently requires that split-tank/hump over the drive shaft and has problems with accurate gas gauge readings. IIRC there is a class action suit being filed again Audi because numerous Audi A6 Quattro owners have been stranded when their gauge indicated fuel and they were o-u-t of gas. Audi is trying to resolve the issue.

I have been running my '92 on E for days. The light finaly came on, it is a little square oposite the gas symbol next to the gas gauge. Just as quickly as it came on, it went back out. My '01 stays on as soon as it is triggered. The needle on the '92 is now well below E.
