Default Dome light issues

Bought a 2002 bugeye wrx three weeks ago. Just noticed that the dome light didn't come on when I opened a door at night. The dome switch had been turned to the off position. Ok well I turned it to the middle and now the light dims when the doors are closed but stays on now..For ever...

So integrated module? The door light on the dash is off and the dome light works great when it's "on". But I actually want it coming on when doors are open and turning off when they are closed!

Check to see if the switch is making a connection to ground in the middle position. The switch makes the ground connection when you turn the light on manually.

It sounds like the ground is made at the door switches? How would I check that there is a ground connections? I apologize but I can do most things but I am no good at electrical.

I'm having the same problem with my 06 2.5i.

I cut my DIY LED strip in the cargo area while the lights were on, I could smell something burned.

When I went to the front of the car I could smell something had burned.

I have checked the grounding, I have unplugged the LEDs to see if the dome light would shut off automatically, which it won't.

I have researched and it appears I might have fried something in the BIU. All other lights work, only the dome light doesn't go out automatically.

So, would the consensus be that I fried something in the BIU, and I should get a new one?

You wise advice is the force...

The light control module can only handle about 30 watts, if you shorted it to ground it's prolly toast.

Thanks.

Does this mean I will need to replace the BIU, or replace something else?

Sorry, I have only been able to start one thread, I don't mean to highjack yours.

All I want to know if the BIU needs to be replaced or something else.

Sorry.

I got a used IBU, does any one know it's location?

I have read it's under the passengers foot well.

And some one mention its under the the steering wheel.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry for resorting to ask my question on your thread.

***Sept. 18** just replaced the IBU (behind steering wheel) and the dome light is back to normal. Opened the damaged IBU and a copper trace was visibly burned.

Tapped the dome light power lead and didn't unhook it when I was snaking the tap wire behind the steering wheel. There must have been some exposed bare wire and think it must arced into the module.

Apparently the module has some degree of control of the cigarette lighter and the auto-dimming mirror and compass. Neither would power-up for a varying degree of time (5-10 minutes or so) after the incident. Now they power right up, and the dome light operates normally again.

It was easy-peasy to replace. Be sure to have a 1/4" drive with some extensions with a u-joint and a 10mm socket.
