Angry What the HELL is wrong with the Baby Bommer Generation???

***Rant**

Why does this generation think that the internet and every living soul was purely created to: a) steal their identities b) steal their money ???

My wife an I are in the process of purchasing our fist home and we were completely blessed with a gift amount of 5K from my father to help with the down payment. The bank knew this and needed my dad to fill out a gift letter...pretty standard. However, my dad is unwilling to provide the account number on the letter citing....."bank could steal his account number...then his money"...etc.... Completely frustrating.

My mother is no better...she has so much internet security on her computer that you can't even surf the internet. She's convinced that people will steal her identity

***end of rant***

They're getting old, and when you get old, you become stupid.

See any commercial for the Jitterbug cell phone. We start with kids toys, get more advanced, and then revert to kids toys.

The older you get, the more paranoid you become. That's about it in a nutshell.

My mom doesn't know the difference between the address bar and the Google search box that comes up when you first open Firefox (with the default homepage).

Well, I wouldn't list spelling amongst their faults.

Maybe they're more paranoid because their earning power has declined and they have to live on a fixed budget for the rest of their lives, not to mention they may be worried about losing their SS to bailing out idiots from your generation who were too stupid (or not paranoid enough) to read the loan terms.

They don't understand it. I've had to explain to several people that stuff is only on the internet if somebody puts it there. They thought every piece of knowledge ever was on teh intarwebs. That, and they thought it was all on google not realizing google was like the card catalogue at the library, it just points you where you want to go.

You could just let the funds sit in your bank account for 2-3 months (two statements not showing the deposit) and then the bank won't care.

way look as ungrateful and self-centered as possible.
you seem to realize that you are "completely blessed" yet you seem unwilling to acknowledge where the blessing is coming from.
sorry that you are so put out and that accepting a 5K gift turned out to be such a burden to you.

I think my dad finally comprehended that you could check internet email (ie, gmail) from anywhere that has an internet connection. I know he used to use outlook at work, so I believe he thought that you could only check all mail from one computer.

Why would you have to get that done? I sent my mom a check for 5K and apparently there was no problem.

Why do they feel that way? Because the news overstates the risk of identity theft, just like the pedophile threat.

be happy that you received the gift. If your father doesn't want to provide the account number, choose a new bank.

The bank wants to ensure that the 5K is a gift not a loan which would increase your repayment burden making you more of a default risk.

that's good info ^ didn't know that...

love the OT...guess this is why I spend all my time browsing the OT than any of the other forums now. To be clear: I know the rant makes me look like an ungrateful prick to some....and well...maybe I am. The gift was unbelievable and a shock to my wife and I and enabled us to get this far in the loan process and hopefully be in a place to call our own by the end of this month. The rant stems from my parents thinking that everyone is always out to get them...it's frustrating...media sensationalism at it's finest.
