Default R160 Differential covers all universal?

I know this is for my legacy, but it's rear end related so I put it here.

Apparently my 92 Legacy rear end cover has a crack in it, and it's leaking. Epoxy isn't sealing the crack, and so I figured it's time to get it fixed. I have a 92 Legacy Wagon (2.2L N/A). As far as I know the rear end is a R160. Looking up a new differential cover (38316aa010) per the FSM part number, results in various years that 38316aa010 fits. It however doesn't list any 90-94, but that could be a online catalog error.

Someone showed me the different look of a 95 impreza cover and noted the longer studs for the subframe. Doing a few searches on here, most of the r160s I've come across have the same cover as what I do.

So I guess my question is, do the R160s use the same cover, and just the stud length varies on them for the subframe or are they different?

Matt

I can't answer definatively, but on my 1997 R160 donor aside from the stud lengths, the covers looked pretty damn similar to both my 1999 RS R160 and my 2006 WRX R160.

The 1999 RS R160 cover had the same stud length as the 2006 WRX unit. I bolted the 1999 RS cover onto the 1997 R160 without leak or issues.

This is all the help I can offer you. Sorry.

There are two types of R160s. The common kind with the bearing caps bolted on with five bolts in a pentagon pattern. The other is smaller and used on 1.8 imprezas and I think some new legacys but it has adjustable bearing caps like the tranny.

I think the smaller one has fins on it and the bigger one is smooth.

So yes if it is smooth it will fit and they are all the same.

Same cover, sometimes different mounting stud lengths and plugs(male vs. female plugs).
