No compressor required, no need to clock the motor for each cylinder, just a key and a spark plug hole...

Sometimes I have to remind myself that most people don't have a full shop with a compressor, specialty tools and a 5000lb lift in their backyard. Most just have a garage they park their car in and many not even that. Also, for many, if you tell somebody to find top dead center on each cylinder it rapidly exceeds their abilities.

I can't imagine a person who would be considering doing a leakdown test that doesn't understand what TDC is.

Precisely stated! If you don't know what TDC is then a leak down test is out of your wheelhouse, therefore, making a compression test the easier test for leaks. ...all of which require a teardown.

I can't imagine a person who doesn't know what TDC is even considering doing a compression test regardless of needing to have the piston at TDC to do it.

I can. Way back when, I knew how to do a compression test but lacked the tools and knowhow to do a leak down. There you go, real life proof! You don't have to imagine anymore.
