Default 2006 Impreza gas tank fill - fuel tank filler neck problems.

I thought I would start a thread and see if anyone else had run into this. I looked through advanced search and didn’t see anything.

For the third time in a row, at three different gas stations, I haven’t been able to fill up my 06 WRX without this weird problem happening. It will only fill about 1/4 gallon or less until the handle pops on the gas pump. So I’ve got to keep squeezing the handle and re-setting it over and over. I’m going to call the dealership tomorrow and post an update, but I was curious if anyone else had run into this.

For the record, after 15k miles this has been the only real problem.

More than likely you have a failed valve inside the tank. Federal regulations have mandated new, ever increasing laws requiring the car manufacturer to lessen the emission of gas fumes into the atmosphere. Thus, subaru has intergrated some system of recycling and venting the fumes from the gas tank back into the combustion chamber in order to burn them off and not have them released into the air.

During re-fueling there is a flap that closes off the vent lines so that they don't fill up with fuel. Also, there is a float(similar to the one in a toilet) that will cause the fuel handle from the pump to reset. This float is probably stuck in some way. Please refrain from "topping-off" your gas tanks as it can cause more CEL's than you care to know. Not only that, most technicians find it hard to learn this system and diagnosing is difficult because of all of the vent lines and valves required to make the system work.

Thanks for the great feedback. I'm hoping its a stuck float. Since I've had the car I've had two overflows at the station, I manually hold the handle now. I read a long thread that it's a somewhat common issue on Subarus.

I've been careful to not fill it up completely in the last three fill ups.

Also, about three weeks ago I had a CEL come on during a hour long ride home from a friends house. I got home, plugged in the AP and the code was the gas cap being loose. I did fill up while down in her area, but I always turn the cap until it clicks, I've done it so many times it's like instinct. I don't know if it was me or what but it is weird that it came on and now another weird problem springing up with the gas tank. I'm not sure what to tell the dealership, I don't know it I should tell them I read the code with the AP or what.

Well, what you can do is tell them that at one point the CEL did come on and that a local AutoZone checked it and said it was a loose gas cap. Basically, though, what you do have is a problem with that system. It is not necessarily the gas cap. Just a venting problem.

The service manager I talked to hadn’t seen this as a problem in the 06 models. He didn’t have any suggestions besides brining it in. I’ve got an appointment for Jan 5th after I’m done moving. I’ll post an update.

Sweet, more than likely they'll have to drop the gas tank. The float either moves or doesn't. Moves=good, no movement=bad. That simple.

Yup, the only info they could pull on it was a write up in the tech tips for aug 06. They tried that but it didn’t work or didn’t apply to my car. They ordered a new gas tank to be installed next week. We will see if that fixes the issue.

Have you by any chance had the fuel pump changed on your car ? I began having the same problem after I had some major upgrades done to my car. Sometimes it's worse than others. I know that because I re-fuel at the same place every time !

Nope, same fuel pump. They are guessing there is a bad valve inside the tank. I'll post the conclusion next week when they change it.

I have an 06 Impreza 2.5i, I've had the problem with the tank overfilling happen twice now. Once by just letting it fill automatically and the other by manually holding it down all the way. Now I manually pump and ease off the gas when I know I'm "getting there." I still top off my tank though as I know I can go 3 "clicks"-worth safely. I have not thrown a CEL once... not like I've have any means of reading them at the moment.

O/T: Also today after work, the car's airbag light wouldn't go off. It took a good 5 minutes or so (perhaps heating the car up and honking the horn helped) until I parked, shutoff and restarted the car. I've had no issues since. The outside temperature as per the car was 2 degrees C or 1 degree C according to the radio and billboards.

I read a thread a long while ago about the overfill problem. That seems to be somewhat common. It happened twice to me before I wised up and didn’t use the hold-latch thing. Another pain in the ass at the pump.
