Default Gas tank problem.. not able to get a full tank.

EDIT: Problem has nothing to do with any modifications

Its a sending unit problem and only the sti's are cursed with it

Well,

When the gas light turns on 10miles later I go in for a fill up, and I'm only able to get 10.987gal. our tanks are 15.9
Its been going on for awhile now, thought i was paranoid. and the gas indicator hand is one bar under the F. So now I know thats not reading incorrectly.

I've told the mechanics at the dealership about my problem; there tech line suggested:
The float level indicator may be stuck in a higher than normal position.
second would have to be a problem with the evap canister reading a wrong value.

But no one has gotten back to me yet..
anybody have issues similar to this?(still: 3/08)

I gotten 60+miles after the gas light turn on.
Oh, and you got about 1mile & some left to go when your gas light indicator starts blinking haha

My warranty period is done. but problem started happening way before my warranty was up. would they still cover this? I have 4plus months of gas receipt to prove it.

it sounds like the is most likely a block in the vent tube for the filler neck or the filler tube it self

I can generally only fill about 11 gallons after my light turns on also...I thought it was normal due to the reserve for mileage after E.

Yeah we have massive reserves. Mine will have ~4gals left when the light goes on.

Once in a very rare while I actually get a full tank, otherwise it's usually only 7/8ths full.

Why would this happen.

okay,

I remember easily get 300miles to the tank, driving moderately. And 340 driving really conservative(mostly highway, 65mph / slow acceleration / shifting below 3rpm) . Now barely hitting 248mile to the tank with moderate driving.
How about the gas indicator hand?when filled up is one bar before F

car is completely stock. new tires, new air filter.

Could be the Arizona heat. I know my car will barely hit 200 before its hovering above E.

Take it back to the dealership or try a different one and see what they say.

i also have the same problem. i recently bought a 04sti about 5mths ago and filling up was no prob. now i recently added a turbo back, headers, intake, and got aprotune. after the tune i'm not able to get a full tank as well. only 7/8's as the OP said. prior to the tune, never had any problems. it sucks living in hawaii and gas prices for super here is anywhere from $3.52 to $3.70.

I went to another dealership yesterday.
Service manager said a couple of cars within the past month or so came in and have same problems. only seems like the STi's.. unless the WRX owners are just to careless to notice.. 05' 07' and now yours 04' STi's.

Could heat be a factor? its not hot in HAWAII this time of year? We hit above 103degrees everyday.

I also have this problem with my 04 STI. I can only fill up to 3/4 a tank and get around 200 miles until the light turns on. I've had my car into one dealership who placed a faulty sensor in the tank. That did not fix it and the dealership cant figure it out. I am now going to another dealership in Orlando to see if they can fix it.

There are many things that can cause this I am told.

Oh K,
So how much are these parts? What is the actual part numbers/ or names of these parts? Did you replace them yourself? How did you do it? how did you go about drain your gas tank safely? We'll need details please!!

So yeah, the GAS LIGHT has been on, Ive been drive 40+ miles now. I have a extra container of gas in my trunk. Im hoping that maybe when I drive it to empty, some miracle will happen, that when i fill her back up everything will be fine..

I would like to know this too I just picked up an 04 STi in Tampa that has this same weird issue. I had an 04 before this and when the gas pump would click I could normally get another 2 gallons in the tank if I went slightly slower the rest of the way and thought that this 04 was the same way and that was causing it...well tried and guess what...nope...lol I only got about half a gallon more in before I could tell it was really full and didn't want anymore (no I did not overflow it onto the ground) after owning numerous STi's I have learned little tricks to tell if its full or not yet mainly thanks to that other 04 I had that was weird at the pumps.

Mine has done this since day 1. It used to be intermittent now it's all the time. Fill it up. I get 3/4 of a tank. Drive for 10-15 miles. then it's up to full or close to it. My dealer is too stupid to know how to fix it so I said screw it and I just deal with it.

I can usually get about 400 miles to my tank highway driving and like 280-320 in city slight agressive driving and i live in south alabama where its hela humid and hot. I dont see how the heat would affect it too much.

At the pump when filling up does it 'click' and shut off the fuel at the pump?

The click has nothing to do with the float sensor... it is the pressure that is in the tank that shuts off the fuel input, not the float sensor. - I had the same problem where I would 'fill up' and it would only bring my gauge to about 1/2 full. But if I drove the est 290 miles I get on a tank the gas gauge would be below E and throw a P0462 (463?) fuel sensor out of spec error.

For the part number... call you dealer and they will ask for the VIN of the car and they can look it up. There are two different part# for the same thing... its based on what they lookup with your VIN.

Another 07 STI with the same problem... but I just go off my odometer now and my perceived level of "spirited driving" per tank.

My gauge usually goes in cycles of being retarded for a few months, then normal for another few months. Right now, the reserve light comes on and I can only get ~11 gallons in the tank. So, I just base it off miles and I know that at ~240 miles, I'm ready for a fill.

Recalls are only for safety issues. A bad fuel gauge sender would be a TSB, not a recall. And there has to be a large enough percentage of them to warrant the TSB, not just a couple of cars. That's just standard warranty coverage territory.
