![]() GM to cut 25,000 jobs by '08
CEO says automaker plans unspecified number of plant closings. June 7, 2005: 9:29 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Embattled automaker General Motors Corp. anticipates an unspecified number of plant closing in the next three and half years to cut U.S. employment by 25,000 workers, Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner told shareholders Tuesday. The head of the world's No. 1 automaker did not give any details other than to say GM needs to cut capacity by the end of 2008. He said the company's goal is to trim U.S. capacity so that the company gets to 100 percent utilization or better. GM also announced plans to buy more components from suppliers outside the United States, and reported it couldn't yet be sure if it would win needed health care cost reductions from the United Auto Workers union. Thats alot of jobs. -Rob

![]() So that is how they can afford to give out the employee discount... they won't have enough employees left to use that portion of the budget.

![]() Dumb ****ing union workers.
I can't wait till they revolt and get the media's attention as they try to explain to us that they are 'entitled' to these good paying non-education requiring jobs that thier father had, and they were hoping to pass onto thier sons. Dumb ****s think they can flunk outta highschool and be guaranteed a job at the local Fisher Carraige plant. NO! I hate unions. |

![]() Well there's a suprise. GM has cut too many corners for too many years in automobile production. The Cobalt is a step in the right direction, but it's too little too late. GM is a decade behind in hydrid technology. GM has nothing that can compete in the sport compact segment.
The only thing GM makes I would want is a Corvette, hopefully that doesn't cease to exist when GM does.. |

![]() It's going to be a difficult balance. On the one hand, you could say that GM has to accept that they'll never sell as many cars as they did and they just need to shrink. However, right now, each employee is supporting 2.5 retirees from "the good ol' days". So firing people is just going to increase that burden and lower profitability. I don't think a complete portfolio of good cars could save them.
Talk about a rock and a hard place... |

![]() At that rate, it's 22.8 people they have to fire each day. "you're fired, you're fired, you're fired... you... you're fired tomorrow morning at 9am"

I dunno, a recent program "Meet the Press" this weekend tied most of GM's problems to Unions, especially at thier Opel Plant in Germany and the Saab facility in Gothenburg/Malmo, let alone thier current and ongoing negotiations with the UAW stateside. Just think, unions are outmoded. The DoL can do what most of what the union protects. Think of businesses that are highly unionized (Railroads, autoworkers, airlines, etc.). Since GM alone adds $.01 of every dollar than moves in our economy, this is a big deal. If GM can't muster the R&D money, where can they get money? Shoring up union benefit packages? Legal fees? Mediation charges? I'd hate to know the budget GM has just to entertain these lunatics. GM is doing good things and bad things, so we can't chastise them like of late. Good things: 1. Cadillac brand 2. Saturn brand 3. Cobalt 4. Truck division 5. Allison- Powertrain systems 6. GM-EMD Motive power Bad things: 1. Pontiac Brand 2. Buick Brand 3. Chevrolet Cars 4. Saab Brand 5. Vauxhall/Opel Brands 6. Vibe/GTO's 7. Lack of hybrid commitment |
