Default MY98 ECU Remap/Reflash

Hey guys,

I've got a 6S ECU on my MY98 STi Engine.
I am staged 1 (Megan DP, JASMA Cat-back, Intake,BOV, VF28)

Is my ECU tunable? can I custom re-map it?

Default Brain will hurt, it's a ton of info to absorb!

Hi guys (and gals),
New here... I find your site and conversations (those I've checked out) first rate. I look forward to many challenges and righteous convo when my time permits. My goal and sole purpose to this post is to help dispell some myths and clear up issues BEFORE it costs any of you great expense or a "final" bang :"(
I have over 35 yrs as an auto driveability tech (specialize in electronic diagnosis and tuning). I began teaching this stuff when our team of instructors had to write courses and support books because the material for students (other mechanics) simply didn't exist (early 80's).
I love this stuff! It is pure and simple physics, machines, and those servicing them, have to abide by the laws. Our machines and their methods of operation may change but the laws (physics) don't. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow...
I recently helped a customer PROPERLY set up a Vi-PEC V44 to his 99 Mitsu 3000GT VR4. Both are amazing pieces of work. It was my first real look inside electronic engine management which allowed me to determine the results. I have wrenched/managed for many OE dealerships, reflashed hundreds of vehicles, to actually get a choice what mods to make calibration-wise WOW! I felt like I was back to rejetting carbs, curving distributors, and setting up juice ~ like a kid in a candy store with major deja vu.
ANY mods to any OE's machine must be thoroughly researched before investing - its the only way to get great results.
You would not believe the numbers of customers I've seen waste their money performing half a Mod. Like a bad knot, the mods often come undone. Failures can cost a hundred times more than doing the mod right to start with.
Don't expect to install a new programmable ECU and drive away that afternoon. For every hour of tuning I put in about 3-4 hours of research.
Accept the fact that mods changing emissions (in a testing state/area) are often unable to be corrected through tuning. Most car owners will run one version of their ride just for the smog test. Some swap entire exhaust, intake and engine management systems to get the pass.
Here is the best advice I can offer:
Find a good tuner, the more time they are willing to spend discussing your mods and helping you work within your budget (off the clock) the more successful the end result. A good shop/tech will have a following, ask around. Unless you have deep pockets, stick with proven mods. Leave the expensive R&D up to the pro's at the track (they usually have a fresh one in the crate to cover their mistakes before anyone notices).
Perform mods wisely ~ if you make it go faster, make it stop/steer faster too. Unless you perform a full mod correctly, any gain in one area will sacrifice something else. Rules of the track baby.
Cheers to all, keep those shiny sides up!
Tim.

OE's try to keep their systems (& black boxes) proprietary.
Although these ECU's often have a means of repflashing (EEPROM types) the ability is typically left to the OE dealerships (who can reflash updates & revisions to the software only). No changes or adjustments can be performed other than the odd factory option configurations.
Some tekkies have/can determine protocols and hack systems (this changes the software checksum as has been mentioned here).
Ease of use and the broad abilities to Map fuel, timing & output (eg.boost) controls have brought aftermarket user programmable ECUs into existance.
Racing relies on them.
Mods become far easier to see to completion.
Research the mods (from their manufacturer and blogs like this one). If calibration tuning is a recommended part of the full mod, you know what to do.

I have read a few threads about disabling codes in the ECU using romraider, however I have a 2000 RS and saw in a post that I can't use the program. What about the older Enginuity? Would using ECUexplorer allow me to disable codes, or just monitor my ecu? I am looking to disable misfire codes. Also, do you know of a list of what codes trigger limp-home mode? Any help would be greatly appreciated! If there is no solution in opensource, what aftermarket path do I need to take!? There has to be some way of doing this.

I am doing a JDM EJ20G swap into my beetle and this was a big help. The subaru wiring is a mess not to mention finding a complete bulk head harness from a JDM 96 WRX is pretty much impossible.

Very helpful information, but I have heard other info as well. My plan is to get a turbo back exhaust and a cold air intake to start off, then find a tuner to help me with all of it, then work up from there. I just recently bought a used 08' WRX, what do you think?

I have a 2005 WRX, Cobb access port, nothing more...yet. Well not that affects this particular thread anyway. I am thinking about getting the Cobb catted downpipe with the Borla Hush twin tipped cat back. Aside from the Cobb map not being exact, anybody have any thoughts on it? Would it ruin the whole object because the muffler isn't high flow (assumption because it is quieter then the Cobb one)? I am most worried about efficiency and not destroying my engine...power is third on that list, but I know it will be a welcome side effect .

In case anybody is wondering, I plan on getting cold air intake then getting a custom tune as soon as funds allow.

Right, you shouldn't be posting this question here.
Short answer is: you will get a little more power but gas mileage (efficiency), will really suffer. You won't particularly be hurting the engine but will be throwing money down the down the exhaust in the form of unburned gas.

Yeah I kinda figured but I can't find the topic of exhaust, and it wouldn't let me start a new thread. Where am I supposed to post this question?

Edit: Sorry I found where to post it. Thanks for the heads up though.

Great thread! I have a question about the stock tune on newer WRXs (04+). Ive seen in other threads and this one stating the stock tune is not the greatest and can cause the engine to run lean, leading to other more serious issues.
As said in this post, the problem really arises when aftermarket parts are added such as intake and exhaust.
I have a stock 09 and have begun to somewhat worry that I need to invest in some sort of engine management simply as a means of preventing serious engine issues. (i.e-cobb AP stage 1)
Clarification on this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for all the awesome information. I am new to the wrx world as well as this forum. I just bought a 2013 Subaru WRX and can't wait to start with mods. This was a very good read that has given good insight on future mods. I look forward to reading more of these awesome threads!

Question Simtec ECU with low octane

Dear all,

I have just purchased a wrx turbo(2005) 330 BHP with an aftermarket ecu simtec. My concern is that here in Malta our fuel octane is too low 87 and we don't have the 95 octane. My question is does simtec ecu offers learning mode to change timing settings according to our low octane. Would you recommend re tune ecu with low octane to avoid issues?

Thanks all for your help

I venture to say that if you ask this question and cant spell "wanna", or form a sentence, that it would be a bad idea for you to attempt tuning a car.
