P045x EVAP system code? This may help. Fuel tank pressure sensor location.

I've read a number of OLD posts looking for the physical location of the fuel tank pressure sensor for various models (foresters, WRXs, etc.) while trying to troubleshoot a P045x code (P0453 in my case) and no one ever seems to have found it.

I FOUND IT!

And I would imagine its in a similar spot on other models

It is located on the rear passenger side above the upper control arm. if you have skinnier arms you can just reach it.

If I solve my P0453 code I will post my solution. Fingers crossed.

Hope this information is of use to someone since it really would have helped me when I started to off-and-on look for this thing days ago since all diagrams in the manual are SO vague about its location.

Update: Following the service manual, I checked the EVAP_VP (vapor pressure) numbers which should read less than 7.95 kPA with the sensor plugged in (it was reading 8.035 kPa). Then unplugged the tank pressure sensor and checked the readings again and got 8.191 kPa. Per the Subaru service manual this means I have a short somewhere between the tank pressure sensor and ECM. This is going to be fun to fix....

Oh and still having issues adding pictures (img.nasioc.com is refusing to send a confirmation email.....)

P0453 Update/possibly solved?:

Checked for a short between the fuel tank pressure sensor and ECU.... None found.

Sprayed out the connectors for the fuel tank pressure sensor with contact cleaner and reattached everything.

Took it for a test drive (about 10 miles) and the code hasn't come back yet. It was reappearing within 5 miles before so possible issue was a bad contact (assuming it doesn't come back again)?

Also checked the EVAP_VP numbers again and was reading 15+ kPA. This should be an issue according to the service manual, but no check engine light or codes are present so I'm really not sure what to believe at this point..... EVAP problems suck.

STILL trying to get pictures loaded up here in case anyone needs to find the tank pressure sensor.

5 days later and still no CEL or code returning so if anyone gets a P0453 like I did, try cleaning the contacts on your fuel tank pressure sensor before diving super deep into the issue and replacing expensive EVAP bits. I think this is the last of my updates until I FINALLY get pictures working and/or the code returns. Hope this info can be of use to someone at some point. If not I'm just talking to myself on a forum.

Let's hope dirty connectors is the simple fix. Kind of chasing the same issue on my 05 Legacy GT wagon.

Fingers crossed for ya. I feel there should be a dedicated thread to EVAP codes and fixes on here. They are a pain to figure out and the info is so scattered its really hard to figure out what to check. Put close to 200 miles on my WRX since the code was cleared last and so far so good.

My car is going back to the Tech at the local shop on Wed. I talked with him the other day, he is well-trained on the EVAP systems. I'll try and remember to post an update when I have one.

Just stopped by the repair shop. The smoke test showed a leak at the grommet where a nipple and hose go through the body. The pieces were pretty much shot. He's replacing those and will re-smoke test.

I'm taking the car to VT today, hoping no more CEL. It will have over 300 miles in the next couple of days...I'll be and post an update if it comes back.

Back in VT today, car runs and works great. Even rolled 302,000 miles on the drive up. The engine has almost 150,000 trouble free miles. The car was dynoed with a vf52 back in Aug 2011, I installed the ej257 May 20 2012 at 154,000 miles on the car.
