Default Intake Cam Sprocket Play

I have some play on my intake cam sprockets, both sides, before they actually catch the dowel pin. I can't check with go no go pin gauges until I get back to work but the dowel pins both measure 5mm.
Is there ever this much play in these? If i snug the bolts up just a little bit it's gone. The cam is not moving at all, I can see down the center of the sprocket.
Other then the dowel pins and keyholes, I have no idea what this could be.

(yes i know it's labeled wrong )

.191(5mm about) pin gauge fits with a lot of wobble, and a .205(5.2mm roughly) pin gauge fits nice and snug with no play.

Should I get some stepped dowel pins and replace the ones on the end of my cam?

It really seems like a lot of wiggle and Iím worried about the timing jumping a tooth or gouging the dowel pin hole because thereís room to move.

Give us a pic of the holes. They can get enlarged while installing or prob more so removing the gears. Only safe way is to hold the center with the Subaru tool. I use the 23 tools too but there is a risk when the hex bolts are 2000ft/lbs

The holes are fine, one is a brand new cam sprocket. The dowel pins measure the same across all 4 cam shafts, the exhaust cams are nice and snug.

Small pin is the size of the cam dowel(5.0mm), large pin is 5.2mm. You can see the hole isnít screwed up by seeing around the edges of the larger sized pin gauge.

Should be no wiggle, that wiggle overtime open up that pin hole and break it off, IM talking from experience...

Only problem is that a brand new cam gear isnít fitting tight on a dowel pin that is the size it should be from the factory. Makes no sense

They do look fine, mine were obviously wider, enough the oil port next to it was smushed smaller

Same for my old one, as you saw in my other post Saw Smeedia on youtube did it on one too.

I got ahold of an IAG tech and she said the wiggle should be fine, but sheíd also ask another one and hasnít gotten back to me yet.
My machinist said it would be fine, itís just a locating pin, just loctite the bolt and have it turned in the direction that the belt moves. Subaru dealership tech said it would be fine, itís just a locating pin.

I guess Iíll find out when I do the timing ***129335;***127996;***8205;***9794;***65039;

The dowel pins arenít messed up at all, just weird it wiggles on keyholes on a new cam and an old cam, with the pins being the right size and the holes being the right side I would have figured a tight fit.

If my timing doesnít line up right Iím just going to pull the pins and grind a 5.5mm pin down to spec or use a 5mm pin thatís knurled on one end since theyíre usually about .20-.25 larger on the knurled end.

I dunno man, seems like something else happened. That pin is just for locating. Once itís bolted on there shouldnít be force on the pin from the cam gear turning..
Or so Iíve been told.
