Noisy noisy engine. Mic in engine bay recording provided.

Hey all.


So I know the engine is usually noisy on our cars, but I think this might be more than lifter tick. I bought this car used, so it's always had this sound, but I'm looking into possibly fixing it, so I'd like to know if anyone here can identify what I'm hearing. Piston slap maybe? Car is a 2005 manual LGT with about 155K miles on it. Car was driven HARD by previous owner. I had all injectors cleaned at a professional shop a few months ago.

There's also a whine when accelerating in 2nd gear, is this "normal" as in I shouldn't worry about it, or could the gearbox be bad? Gears don't pop-out or anything so I don't think it's an issue, but just in case.

Data log the cam advance. Tho it does sound like maybe an ex leak, then valve tick. One of the few videos that dosnt sound like rods

Thanks, yeah I've see quite a few "What's this sound?" vids and I could tell mine didn't sound like that.

It could very well be exhaust leak, I have definitely smelled smoke after a pull, which I assumed was from the rear, but now I don't think so.

I agree, best is to do data logging on the VVT, when was the last time the oil was changed
