I tested at cut out. Since it was under the car and I couldnt test it as perfectly as the other exhausts, I slightly doubt it's reading. I got 112dB, which equals the loudest exhausts I have tested by Blitz.

Hey - let me know when you are in town again. I now have a Scoobysport + TXS stealthback + uppipe to add to the list. Not many people have the Scoobysport it seems like, and I am interested to see how it compares to my old Prodrive.

I tested 5 more cars yesterday. I also tested the Worx Tuning exhaust, which is brand new. It is officially the 3rd loudest exhaust I've tested so far.

Appreciate the time you put into your contributions, all very interesting. If you're ever in town you may borrow my car for testing.

Thank you for all the work you put into this. It will be very helpful to many members. One detail: I downloaded the .txt file of your data. In your notes, d) states: "3dB is equal to twice the loudness..." Actually, 3db is a barely noticeable increase in volume. Where you may have gotten confused is that with audio equipment, +3 db represents a doubling of amplifier _power_. Anyway, thanks again! |

Thats a nice test and all, but its not accurate to CA standards... and the calibration might be off on your meter when compared to official state testing equipment.
CA standards test it at 4500rpm, for reference. With a 95 dB limit +/- 1.5 dB for error. With my Radioshack analog meter, I tested 92 dB on my set-up, where the official reading by the State Referee is 95.1 dB. Thats quite a difference... but not to the human ear. 5 dB's isnt even really detectable by ear... |

It is not supposed to be a CA standard database. It clearly states at the bottom it is for comparison purposes only. Its purpose is to give people an idea how loud one system is relative to another, not what would keep you from getting a ticket.
The database is very valid because it is done with the same equipment and the same standards every time. Unabomber, don't forget to look us up when you are here this summer. WRX03 claims to have the quietest stage II anywhere, we want to prove it. |

Some people are able to notice a 1 db difference in volume, 3 db is considered a 'moderate' increase, 10 db is perceived as a doubling of volume. I think it's great that Unabomber is doing this testing -- it is the kind of thing NASIOC could use more of. I am only trying to make his work even more useful by explaining how spl given as a 'db' reading relates to how people actually perceive (or hear) sound. |

Bump for 2 more updates, another Borla Hush and another M2. Another local guy JUST got a Greddy SP2, so I'll be testing that in short order. I rode in his car and I have a fear that it might beat out my Prodrive as the Quiet King.

1db is about the threshold of human perception on a solid test tone. With things like music or more complex sounds it is harder to hear small differences.
One click on a volume knob (if yours clicks) is about 1 to 2 db. 3db is twice the energy, but definitely not heard by a human as "twice as loud". 3db is what you get when you swap out a 300 watt amp for a 600 watt amp. This is why you can point and laugh at people who say their stereo is twice as loud afte getting an amp that is twice as big. It's a log scale. As for what is heard as twice as loud, you could argue that for decades. It is subjective. 6db? 10db? I dunno. Personally I subscribe to the "about 10db" theory, but even that isn't perfect. 100db might be "twice as loud" as 90db to a person, but 110db may not be "twice as loud" as 100db to the same person. It's a crapshoot. And that is comparing the exact same tone. Two exhausts with simlar objective or measured loudness (db) may seem to a person to have a more drastic difference in subjective loudness . |

I see a lot of Blitz NUR Spec R exhausts out there... but no NUR Spec Touring, like mine. If you're ever up in the Bay Area, CA, Unabomber and want to add another data line to your charts, lemme know.
Gruppe-S SS headers (Jethot 2000 coated), Vishnu 321 Flex uppipe, Perrin downpipe, Blitz NUR Spec Touring catback. Although 'catback' on my car is something of a misnomer, as there are is no 'cat' to be in 'back' of. -Bis Last edited by Bismarck; 07-09-2005 at 10:02 AM. |
