I just started noticing a quiet whirring noise only when 5th gear is engaged. I can hear the noise whether or not the clutch is engaged and only if there car is moving. I also checked the trans fluid level. It's at full. Is my 5th gear on its way out? Is there any saving it? Thanks.

when you checked fluid was it dark? how many miles? it's most likely the bearings chances are that the noise is most predominate in 5th because the car accelerating masks the noise in the rest of the gears....does it get louder on throttle? does it make the noise coasting?

The fluid was light. The car is at 143k. It's makes the noise coasting. It doesn't really get much louder under acceleration. More like it changes pitch, maybe a little louder.

I am by no means an expert but i do know that the subarus do have issues with the transmission bearings being that almost everyone locally i have talked to has confirmed and if the car was used its possible that the PO may have neglected the fluid ran the wrong fluid or even something as simple as not running similar tire pressures can affect the diffs.......also mismatched tires can and will cause issues alot of people don't understand rolling resistance even if tires are the same size the rubber compounds will differ and can create a substantial difference with road force .

if your a DIY type then id say pop the extension housing and start by checking the bearings on the transfer gears and go from there......i know my bugeye was chewing through transfer gear bearings in the end it ruined my trans completely
