The worst reviews have all praised the action and technology, so IMAX 3D is my plan. I know people hate giving a bunch of money to something they're not sure about, but I figure I'm paying for the ride and experience. They meant it to be seen in IMAX 3D. If a movie is good they get a home video purchase, so to me that's where they lose money beyond the initial viewing.

The 3D is well done most of the time but sometimes it's a little fuzzy. When it's panning shots or stationary shots, it looks amazing but during action it gets in the way half the time.

Overall the movie was enjoyable but not great. I get leaving a bit of a cliffhanger for a sequel but it seems they spent too much time setting up a sequel as opposed to explaining some key things in this even slightly. Some mystery is good but this left too much out, I felt.

The first half was great but as it got really action-y, it lost a lot of the buildup between Alita and Ido that made the first half enjoyable.

Pretty sure Cameron is shooting the Avatar sequels in High Frame Rate specifically to combat that fast motion blur in 3D.

Say what you want about Avatar, but Pandora is going to look ****ing amazing in HDR.

...this is not the Avatar thread. I'll let myself out.

I'm going tonight using my MoviePass. I had to check in using the movie They Shall not Grow Old and then bought a ticket for this since MP is **** now. My year subscription expires on the 25th so this will probably the last movie I see with it.

I have a feeling I should just go see They Shall not Grow Old.

I'm a fan of the manga and OVA and just disappointed by the movie. The atmosphere of the world should be darker and more cyberpunk. The movie was pretty much like the OVA, but they decided to cram stuff from the manga in it too soon in a way that makes it flow awkwardly. Acting felt stiff and the chemistry between characters didn't feel strong. Romance, nah, just flat. And enough has already been said about the eyes that I won't even mention it. Action and fight scenes were very good, but they are pretty sparse for the most part.

I really like most films by either Rodriguez or Cameron (haven't seen the sharkboy/lavagirl or spykids films ), but I felt let down seeing this. By comparison, Ghost in the Shell is a better adaptation and more cohesive than this mess.

If you know nothing of the world, maybe it'll feel like interesting eye candy. And maybe enough people will like it that it gets a sequel that could be better. But I really feel it wasn't good.

Um...I don't know what to say about this. Not really my genre. I guess it was more like a superhero movie, lots of fighting, beating the bad guy, etc.

Wife liked it, kid cried at the end. I was ready for a drink.

It was fine. It was pretty, and that's what I was looking to get out of it. Didn't like the ending. No resolution, just a blatant "there's-going-to-be-a-sequel, so we can take more of your money"

That's kind of what I was getting at. It would have been better if they focused more on this movie instead of trying to set the stage for another.

When I saw Jai Courtney, that's when I realized this movie will bomb. Even though it was a tiny role, the dude is box office poison.

It works out better in the theater, the girls face is super expressive. Needs to be big screen and 3D to really get the most out of the production quality of this movie. I went in not expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised. FWIW, I never felt like the movie was leading up to a sequel until it became clear it couldn't be resolved in one movie. Sure, they could have resolved it in this movie, but they put a lot into developing this world, and it deserves a follow up.

Good Sci-Fi action movie about young people with ideals waking up to a world without so many ideals. Interesting and fresh to watch visuals, no bad aftertaste.

I'll probably go see it again with one of my movie geek friends. IMAX would be ideal, you would need a 4000 dollar TV to really get the effect at home.

This is pretty much everything I thought of too. The story was predictable, I don't think I could watch it again, although I would watch a sequel.

So they just remade the OAV? It was one of the earlier things I saw at the IU Japanese Animation club around 1994 or so.

Saw it today IMAX 3D. I actually liked it a lot. Much better than my second viewing of How to Train Your Dragon 3 last night, which I slept through 80% of and didn't laugh once.

Alita definitely feels like a well-adapted anime. Some of the tiffs people have with this movie don't really resonant with me, but I can see how some would have those tiffs.

I'm old. I've seen a lot of media, read a lot, been through a lot. I don't expect everything to follow cannon. I don't want it to. I like different takes, different angles, and anything with a hint of freshness, that alludes to the familiar without blindly following by rote.

It's not a perfect movie or a perfect plot. I am surprised that more people aren't disappointed for a variety of reasons. A lot of people deserve to get more enjoyment out of a lot of movies, if they could but allow it. Personally, I have experienced life as hell on earth more than a couple of times, so I'm not going to get too bent out of shape by a movie that fails to meet my expectations. There were some golden moments in this movie, and a few memorable quotes. Iroh says that if you look for the light, you will often find it, but if you look for the darkness, that is all you will ever see.

There is gold in this movie if you look for it, just a little. These are people I'd like to hang out with, so I'm OK with the flaws.

It's funny, the best example I can think of for this sort of thing is Drummer on the Expanse. Her character was basically a throw-away in the books. The actress who plays her is just so good though that they keep rolling other throw-away characters into her to the point where she's now kind of a major character. Props to the actress (Cara Gee) too because its literally shocking to see her out of character. Voice, mannerisms, accent are all completely different. Most actors these days seem to be hired to play themselves. She's an honest to god Gary Oldman level character actor.

Saw it tonight, and didn't know anything about the OVA or Manga. First time in quite a while I've basically known nothing about a source, and gone in hoping to be surprised.

I liked it, especially fight and motorball scenes. The "love" between her and the boy was really forced and fast, though, so I suppose that's an essential part for the character in the anime? They kinda crammed so much into the dialogue, that thinking back, there are a lot of sub-stories and sub-plots that they could have provided.

I'd watch a sequel, and was also annoyed at the ending. They could have easily edited out 10-15 minutes to fit in the champion race at the end, and at least just have it end all happy with her winning.

My 8yo daughter tensed up at several moments - for PG-13, it's way past say, Marvel movies and your usual PG-13 action flick. Gets kinda intense/gruesome at times.

...actually, an R version of this could have been way darker and probably much better.

Would the anime be considered an R level?

EDIT:

Holy crap, it's all based on only two 30-min OVA episodes? Wow

Ok nevermind, there was a multi-year comic also. Forgot about that.

Yeah, it's a 9 volume manga. The OVA and movie only cover most of the first 3. I'd love to see Figure Four show up, but if they couldn't get enough interest to keep the OVA going in the 90s, I don't see that happening now with a movie that needs a bigger budget.

I think partially I didn't mind the quickness of the romance because everything was brand new to her. It just makes the guy kinda odd, but without knowing more details about his backstory I can only assume so much.
