Default Honeymoon ruined by hospitalization; suggestions for v2.0

So, some of you know this story already. Here's the TL;DR version:

Wife and I left for our 24-day honeymoon on 1/27. On flight #2 of 3, I became extremely ill and had to be hospitalized in Mexico City for five days. Sudden onset of pneumonia and bronchitis, with pleural effusions on my left lung. Admitted to the ER with blue fingernails, gray skin, dark brown urine, and coughing up blood. Oxygen levels were low, temperature was high. Super ****ty and scary all around. I'm much better now, but still coughing badly and my ribs feel like I went 12 rounds with Floyd Mayweather.

Now that we're back home, we're attempting to recoup some of our financial losses and plan a second attempt (hopefully Chase Sapphire comes through with their trip protection as advertised). The goal is to visit Antarctica, and actually set foot on it, without breaking the bank. Not easy to do. Since we are going to have a lot less money to work with this time, we're hoping to hack our way there and avoid travel agents, packages, etc.

Any suggestions?

Antarctica? Why?

I mean, I get it in that cool nerdy way, but why not just go to someplace like Iceland or Alaska if you're on a budget?

We have our reasons. It's a bucket-list location for us. We're both science/nature nerds, and Antarctica is fascinating from that perspective. We got engaged in Iceland in 2016 and are already scheduled for a family trip to Alaska in summer of 2020.

Hey, at least he guessed correctly what interests us! We also want to do New Zealand someday - SO BADLY. But after Antarctica, I think it's the most expensive place to get to.

Here's the TLDR version.
Posts something too long to read.

I'll suggest North Korea.

We were going to Antarctica. Got stuck in Mexico City.

This wasn't intended to be a humblebrag; wife saved up vacation days for over a year for this, and we scrimped and saved to afford it, even asking for contributions to our honeymoon in lieu of wedding gifts. That's the only way we could have afforded this.

Bruh that's when you start a go-fund-me. All the millennials are doing it.

Honestly what you're asking for is equivalent to asking how to get a newer luxury car at a major discount price. It can be done, but you're probably not gonna like it because the cut corners would be too significant. Like..."oh, yeah, this M3 is 20k off asking...but it was in a flood."

Yeah no, we're not gonna set up a go fund me.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any deals or insider tips on getting to Ushuaia, or at least Buenos Aires, or has connections to any tour companies that offer shore excursions on Antarctica that run specials, etc.

We're already planning on staying in AirBnB's and flying economy. We're looking for adventure, not luxury.

That really sucks, Balantz; sorry to hear. Getting sick on a vacation and having to cancel it is bad enough (happened to me two summers ago), but for it to be THAT bad on and on your honeymoon just ****ing blows.

If you don't mind taking buses, you can certainly do that around Patagonia. It just takes awhile to get from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. The expensive part as you know is getting to Antarctica, and I haven't seen too many deals on that since there are windows of the year and not really a shortage of people wanting to go.

Post your sob story on the useless millennial site? (half serious)

Thanks, Kai. Medical bills were $4500, and insurance won't cover it cuz it's out of the country (wayyyy out of network, obv). Plus we had to purchase new flights and spend four extra nights in a hastily arranged hotel. If Chase doesn't come through with our travel protection claim, we'll be out another $11k for everything else. And I can't even work right now since I'm still recovering, which means no income as I'm self-employed. ****ty **** everywhere.

I think it's just this guy.

Hell if he wants a cold tundra that bad he just needed to head to the northern midwest last month.

I'm a little leery of buses to Ushuaia. I've heard horror stories of people getting stuck and missing their trips because of various things blocking the bus routes. Flying seems much more reliable, even though it is more expensive.

Our friends and family were already kind enough to help us pay for this trip initially, I'm not gonna ask anyone for more money. If we lose our money, it isn't the end of the world, just the end of the honeymoon dream. It ****ing blows, but we'll live.

Yeah no. It's a highly in-demand destination, as it's rich with history, science, nature, and incredibly unique things to see.
