Well, well. Imagine my Thanksgiving morning surprise to find out that my car has only burned a half quart in 1373 miles instead of a full quart like my last two 1200 mile intervals. Could it be that the colder temps (20's and 30's) have that much of an impact on consumption? If so, then I may just hold off on trying a 0W30 until the warmer temps come back around in the spring.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Mine is the opposite. Heavier oil and cooler weather hasn't slowed mine. But I did eat well today! |

BTW, I see the Forester owners forum has a very lively thread on oil burning of the FB25

Yep. The foresters are apparently even more prone to it. Of course, they have a head start.

just checked my oil, it hasn't been driven for 24 hours, and it is cold outside, and I didn't warm it up first before checking. down about 3/16" from the full dot. So i added 8oz of oil, and am warming up the car. i think i should have warmed it up first......hoping to not find it over the full mark (3/16" over the dot is 5.3qts on my car)....will find out here very shortly after i shut it off and let it cool.
anyway, the last time i checked it was about 500 miles ago and it really hadn't moved at all, but i have been driving it pretty hard for these last 500, so that might be where some of my possible loss is coming from. I will try to take it easy for the next 1000 and see. time to go check it edit: just checked it, looks pretty close to where "full" is. might be 1-2oz over, and i will try drive much nicer these next 1000 miles and see i guess. no where near as much consumption as some others, and on pace for about .75-1.0qt/7500 miles. On my last oil change I consumed about 1/4 quart of oil in 5000 miles. I guess I shouldn't be too concerned. Kind of funny that my STI doesn't drink any oil and my slowprezza does.

although in my case since the snow started to fall i have done a lot of driving in 1st at 5000rpm or so....i'm sure that isn't good for oil usage |

Boggling, yes!
I decided to see exactly how long mine will go without burning a quart. I'm almost a quart low in 1650 miles. This is the longest I've gone without looking at the dipstick. I think its been four whole days! I'm gonna switch to some cheap 0w20 in about 300 miles, probably this weekend. At 16,000+ miles now, I've seen the consumption grow at a pretty constant rate. Seems to burn faster with every oil change. If I'm burning a quart in less than 2000 miles, which looks likely, I may have to actually start making some appointments for consultations with lawyers specializing in these matters. I don't think I should have to take a huge monetary loss because Subaru of America andd Fuji Heavy Industries made a bunch of lemon cars. I did find some recent court records from somewhere else in fl indicating someone else may have gotten litigious over a new impreza. I'm gonna try to find that link. |

Has anyone tried a 5W20? I read in that forester forum that a 5w20 oil is less volatile (I hope that's the word) than a 0w20, thus less chance of evaporation. I'm admittedly not very knowledgeable about oil, so please go easy on me if that sounds like a stupid statement. :-P

I can say 5w30 doesn't help.

Have just booked mine in for its 6 months service and had a "discussion" with the local Subaru Service manager who insisted that they recommend Semi Synthetic 5-30 or 10-30 for the first 15,000 miles. At this stage have been firm they use Fully Synthetic Subaru 0-20 but they believe I'm wasting my money and puzzled why.
To those reading this thread without high oil use problems have you used the recommended Fully synthetic 0-20 from the first dealer service or has anyone else been recommended Semi Synthetic for the first 6 monthly change ? Last edited by John451; 11-27-2012 at 10:38 PM. |

And, it doesn't even make logical sense. If the reason is to save money, why stop at 15,000 miles? And really, how much would you save with the shorter-life semi-synth oil? And why 5W30 or 10W30? Why not a 0W30 oil? In a cold engine, even a 0W oil is too thick to properly protect the car, until it warms up. You know what really saves money? Doing your own oil changes with oil that you know is correct for your engine. Not necessary, but I'll be getting one of those Fumoto valves before my next change to make it easier. |

While I do my own oil/filter changes on my 8 yr old Ford and 13 yr old Motorbike the 2012 Impreza is my wifes car and will have the service performed by the dealer until the Warranty runs out, looks like I'm best to stay firm with insisting they use fully Synthetic.

assuming you trust them to do it. i wouldn't after what you described. oil changes on this car are extremely easy and you can do your own w/o voiding your warranty |

As for why pay for them to change the oil, its all to do with passing the "red face" test if there are any problems during Warranty period they cannot knock it back if they've performed all the work, plus its what my wife wants. |

Besides spotty qc, STUPID ignorant dealers are subaru's biggest problem.

Just checked the dipstick, and no drop in almost a week. But we finally did get some cold weather. Its a blistering 50-60f in the mornings!
I wonder if anyones installed an oil catch can on one of these cars. |

Subaru UK " We strongly advise that the only oil used in the vehicle is the 0W-20 full synthetic oil. The 2012 Impreza engine has been designed to operate at the optimal level using the 0W-20 full synthetic oil. Please let me know if you have any other questions that I can assist you with. " |

Fully synth is pretty dang expensive isn't it? Especially if some guys are losing oil and needing changes every 5k for sure while topping off all the time... dang what gives?
Any money saved in gas mpg is lost in actual oil prices no? |

of course i didnt have any consumption troubles so i cant help but wonder if that is true but i would follow it and its typical to do a break in oil change at 1k then 3k then normal changes. so cost could come into play when you are doing a change as often. |
