Lug nut torque is 90 NM or 65.7 ft-lbs. I know this because I went to the dealership and asked. They did not know, so the mechanic and I went through the brand new service books and found the above numbers.

I had previously torqued my lugs and I used common specification for that type size, I guessed at 65 ft-lb, not bad!

Necromancer,

Don't jump to conclusions man! Just show me where in the manual it is - buddy! I looked high and low, everywhere and it's not there. Check out specifications page 12-5 under tires, the perfect place and it's not there. So I wrote it in there. It's not in the section where they instruct on changing a tire, another perfect spot, but missing.

I have found numerous errors in the manual and I am not surprised that they forgot to put it in.

Hey if you are going to be smart and say RTFM, you could be kind enough to reference the place in the manual where the information is.

If you find it there, I owe you an apology. If you can't you owe us an apology!

The torque spec for the wheels wasn't listed in the 98 or 99 RS manual either.

I emailed Subaru and got a response of 65-72 lb/ft.

Brad,

It is in the manual but it is kinda hard to find. If I remember, I believe it is in the section giving spare tire changing instructions. I had to find it once myself and I just lucked out in finding it! We should all be here to help each other!

Brucelee RTFM - I think is short for "Read the f**king manual. Kinda uncalled for if you ask me considering the info is kinda hard to find.

Ok, I found it - page 9-11 in the owners manual (2002) 58-72 ft-lbs (78-98 N-m, 8-10 kg-m).

Punk

PunksWRX,

You are a saint. I appreciate the support. I feel the same way about helping people, as long as they also try to help themselves and not rely on someone else all the time. As this thread indicates others have found it hard to find, but once you pointed it out, it was obvious.

When I need information, the owner's manual is the first thing I consult. So I do RTFM, but the information does not always pop out at you. When I did not find it, I could have asked the board, but I was going to the dealer anyways. Originally I used logic to come up with the 65 value.

The Subaru WRX specific service manual (from the dealer) indicates 90 NM or 65.7 ft-lb. I think the owner's manual has a too wide of a range. I would stick to the 65-72 range, as I feel 58 is way too low. Most people may have an extension and/or deep socket and that throws off the actual torque applied to the low side.

Necromancer,

As I promised and I am a man of my word: I apologize! It after all was in TFM! I had the needed information for the newbie who asked the question. It was after all it was their first question. I sensed frustration with the manual so I quickly provided the information. I thought you could have been a little more considerate to a first time poster, but maybe not. Patience is a virtue and I do notice that it is standard procedure for you to leave messages simply put - RTFM. But that's OK.

Thanks all.

Thanks. I could not find the info in the manual either. I am surprised the spec is that low though.

It may be a 19mm lug size, but the diameter of the bolt is small. I asked my friend who is a mechanic and told him it was 19mm and he initially thought 80-90 ft-lb. I said no way, look at how small the bolt is. He looked and we both concured that anything over 65-70 would be way to high. You don't want to over torque and stretch the treads. If you think about it, just look at the chrome plated lug nut. There is not too much meat there. Thin metal material thickness. Too much torque could even crack the lug nut. I am glad you are inquiring, it is important to have proper torque and too much can cause problems as well.

P.S. don't forgot with a 5 bolt pattern there is alot of clamping force there. So the 65 is sufficient. We are not hanging really big heavy wheels and tires out there.
