Default pads- Dealer parts dept. runaround?

So I went to my dealer today to get pads for the '99 GT and the '99 Legacy OB. The parts guy says I need the build date AND the VIN in order to ensure I get the right pads. Sounds like someone just wants to go on lunch break to me, has anyone heard of this before? Of course I didn't have the info so he said he couldn't help me. What gives? I suppose different part #, but I can't believe they wouldn't be the same actual stuff.

99 GT Sedan or Wagon?

and 99 outback limited? or non limited?

there are different pads/part #'s depending...
having the vin number just makes is super easy to look up in the parts system .... not really getting the run around, your parts person was probably just trying to make sure you got the correct pads is all...

let me know what you have an i can help...
