Default Oil Pan Removal

Has anyone removed the oil pan on a 2.5? I drove through some deep snow with my 98 OBW and managed to dent and scrape my oil pan pretty badly so I need to replace it. The Haynes manual says that I have to hoist the engine up two inches to remove the pan. Is this true? You'd think Subaru would put some kind of undercarriage or protective shield around the oil pan because it's the first and lowest point of the car in the front! Perhaps the previous owner removed the covers….

TIA
