I’ve had Pirelli Sottozero 3 (225/50/17) mounted on 17x7.5 Enkei YS5 wheels on my 2017 STI since December of 2016 and I love them. I live on the north shore of Long Island and these tires have yet to fail me. It gets me through slush, ice, and heavy snow. I definitely recommend them.

These are not winter tires.
If you have mild winters and not much hills they should be ok.

Default Tpms question

I just bought a 2015 wrx. The tpms sensor is on but the tire pressure seems fine. I think it has sti wheels on it (gold). Could that be why the sensor is on?

Possibilities:

1) Your gold rims do NOT have TPMS sensors.
2) Your gold rims have TPMS sensors but the code isn't uploaded. You need a scan tool & Quickset - just go to Subaru and have them do it for you.
3) Your TPMS sensors are not compatible with Subaru.
3) Your TPMS sensors are broken.

Time to go to the dealership.

Default BfGoodrich Winter tires

I got my winter BfGoodrich Winter tires from 4wheelonline. I am satisfied because they gave me a discount which is a great help to me.

They have worked very well this winter (we've actually gotten lots of snow this year), and they are fun in the dry too.

Has anyone tried the Vredestein Wintrac Pro? I am thinking of getting them for the next winter as my current Dunlop Wintersport 3 will be on their seventh season by that time.

CR rated Vredestein Wintrac Pro as best performance winter tire in US market.
Tires are rather disappearing from this segment, unluckily.

I am planning to replace my Viking Contact 7 with them on my Miata, when time comes and nothing better is available (OE size 205/45R17, Wintrac Pro will be 215/45R17 - at least for now).

Yep. 6 years ago, Dunlop had the Wintersport 3D and 4D just came out, neither one is available any more. I think that Bridgestone had a Blizzak in Performance Winter as well.

I have a 2016 WRX Limited. I am looking for new winter tires. I have decided on the Continental VikingContact 7. But I am wondering which size would be best :

205/55-17 95T 803revs per mile
215/50-17 95T 816revs per mile

The OEM 245/40-18 is 808 revs per mile. The winter tire sizes are both within 1% of the OEM tire size revs per mile.

If there's a chance you'll be driving in snow deeper than 4" go with the narrower tire. It will cut through better giving more traction. As you go wider you're more likely to have the snow lift (for lack of better word) the car similar to how a wider tire is more likely to hydroplane

Looking to see what’s my best option for tire sizes. The car is lowered at a 1-1.5 in drop & the wheel I have set aside for the winter are 07 BBS wheels 17x8. I frequent to the mountain about 20 times a year for snowboarding. What sizes is everyone running while being lowered?

Is this for the oem wheel? If no, you didn't mention a wheel width.
Be sure to check that a 205 or 215 is approved for your wheel width.

I would stick with something close to oem diameter. 225/50 maybe?

Good Day All -

This is my first Winter in my '20 STi Base in Chicago where there's always the possibility of a blizzard from the months of December to April, sometimes May. Looking to pull trigger on a Winter/Snow tire and wheel set in the next few days.

I currently have the stock OEM wheels and tires (Yokohama Advan V105). Working well so far; even in temps to 30*. However, not looking to use 'em over the winter.

I see two options for the Winter:

1) Just new Winter/Snow tires installed over the OEM wheels (More affordable; but requires the effort of swapping tires)

2) New Winter tires and wheels dedicated to Winter (More expensive; but less effort)

First, which option would you choose - tires only or dedicated tires and wheels?

Second, what tire or tire/wheel combo would you recommend for rough Chicago winters? I prefer traction over speed or any kind of other performance characteristics.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I went the extra set of wheels and tires. Just get the smallest wheels you can fit over your brakes to help keep the cost of everything down. Going narrower also helps cut through snow better aiding in traction. At a cost of $100-$150 to remove, remount and balance every time the season changes, it doesn't take long before you've paid for the extra set of wheels.

For tire, I've used a few but always come back to General Altimax Arctic. For the money these things can't be beat. I had a set of Michelin X-Ice which people love. I didn't find them any better than the Generals, but a lot more expensive.

Default Winter tires for Subaru Outback

The set of front tires that I use is Vredestein Quatrac Pro that I buy at https://tireer.com/best-tires-for-subaru-outback/ , Currently, I want to buy a new set of tires to replace it. I am deciding between Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady and VikingContact 7. Does anyone have experience with these 2 tires for winter?

I would agree with snow_bound26. Unless you can dismount/mount and balance the tires for free, the twice a year the labour in the USA adds up quickly to nice set of wheels.
And even if it is free the tires are not meant to be mounted and dismounted 6-10 times in their lifetime, the wheels will suffer wear too.

That is no brainer, at least for me.

Much bigger question is "which winter tires?".

Put: ice, snow, dry, wet, noise in order of importance. You cannot have everything.

Size wize: go with smallest OEM size or even the smallest wheels that clear the front brakes. Nowadays with large wheels fad it is not impossible to go size -3.

RichardGun: Are you looking for winter or all season/all weather tires?

Viking Contact 7 are very good studless winter tires but Xice Snow and WS90 are a little newer and supposedly a little better. I would buy what is available in the size I want, cheapest from the 3.

Need help finishing my winter package. I have a 2004 sti and just purchased a set of V7 STI wheels. I am needing a set of tires that will check off a lot of boxes so to speak. I live in Texas but drive to my family's house in rural Colorado a couple times a year. I need a winter tire that is not only good in snow, but can hold up to the long drive from Texas to Colorado and back. Also need tires that are good for mud/ slush. All the neighborhood roads are inside national forest and are not paved. so it is either snow packed, loose dirt, or mud in the winter.
