Default Well I though my clutch was slipping

I have a 2000 2.5 RS 5-speed with 142,XXX miles on it, and I thought that my clutch was slipping on it just a couple of weeks ago. Generally when Driving the car I shift at 3000 RPM so as not to put too much stress on the old bag. Well a few weeks ago when it was really cold here in SE CT I would just accelerate normally (not hard at all) and the revs would just rise without the car gaining equal speed, but it would still accelerate a little. I took this to mean that my clutch was slipping.

Fast forward to last week and this week with the weather being warmer, the clutch doesn't slip anymore. I am driving the same way and I even goosed it a few times just to see if it would slip and it did not. It now seems to be fine.

Does anyone know what is going on? I am I being lulled into a false sense of security only to have the clutch go in the next couple of weeks? Was the slippage (if that is what was actually happening) due to the frigid weather? Has anyone had this happen to them?

Thanks in advance for all help guys.

Maybe you glazed over the clutch by slipping it too much and then it wore itself back down? I'm just kind of throwing that out there. It would be interesting to hear if it actually had something to do with the weather.

Rear main seal could have leaked a bit when it was real cold and coated the disc and now it burned off....

Unfortunately I think that is what the car is telling me, but it is weird that it would stop slipping like that once the wheather got nicer. This car is tottally unmodded and just has very high mileage. I am hoping uncle scotty is right though. How can I tell if that is the problem, and how do I go about fixing it? Just bring it to the shop?

I had the same problem but eventually i took it to the shop and they told me it needs to be replaced and same with the flywheel. I rode my slipping clutch for a while until it was happening on a regularly.

Siris, if you don't mind me asking, how much did the repair work cost with parts and labor? You can send me a PM with the info if you don't want to post for everyone. Thank you for the info.

I have 60k on my '02 wrx, clutch slips under boost. Yeah and it also seems to not slip as much when its warmer out. Yesterday it was 60deg today its 25deg... go figure. I've been reading up on clutches, what's a good combo to go with? I have no mods...centerforce/act? Someone give me an idea!

So does anyone else think that I am on borrowed time with the clutch?

LJG33 - My '04 STi with 32k did this after a UTEC install. Never had any slipping issues prior to that, car's never launched, experienced manual driver, etc.

Someone suggested starting it, and putting it in 5th or 6th gear. Let the clutch out slowly, and if it stays running you're in need of a new clutch. Well, if I really babied the clutch I could get it to move, but it definitely stalled doing this test. So my clutch is good, right? Ffwd a few weeks, hasn't slipped under hwy boost in 3-4 weeks, and does so again out of nowhere. So I spoke to my shop (XX Tuning in Wethersfield, CT) and the tech there said that it's a pressure plate issue, and waiting for it to go could potentially mean problems with your synchros.

Needed some brakes though, so the clutch has been on hold for 10k or so. I don't notice the slip any more regularly, although it still happens sometimes. Been much more careful w/the clutch, as I too feel as though I may be on borrowed time. Clutch will be going in within 2-3 weeks....I believe it'll make it till then no problem. Your situation sounds remarkably similar to mine, so thought I'd add my .02. Good luck.

mine slipped in 5th the other morning. it was cold. i was running 20 psi @ 3.5k rpms on the oem turbo... which means a lot of torque. it hasn't really slipped since then, but i've started researching a new clutch. exedy is mentioned a lot, along with their lw fly. i'm checking out clutchnet as well.
