Default 290-300 WHP 2003 2.0 WRX...What turbo?

As stated in title, my goal is 290-300 WHP on 2.0 WRX...

Samco Intercooler Hoses
Samco Turbo Inlet Hose
Short Ram Intake
Cobb AP ProTuned at XX Tuning

Planned Mods:

What Turbo? 18G ? VF22? What would get me there? Currently I put down 226 whp / 249 ft lb tq during my Dyno/ProTune

u can get 300whp on pinks , but if u want anything more than that , get atleast 650cc injectors. pretty much any turbo bigger than a td04 can get u 300whp minus the vf39

u dont need a short ram nor an inlet hose. u need a short ram for fmic which i highly suggest no matter what turbo (one of the best mods ive ever done)

definitely the most effective way to get that magic 300 number everyone looks for. not getting into a DB vs FP debate, but an 18g will definitely get you there. Take your pick of vendors. 16g is possible, but will be harder to break into the 300s

Don't you just love chosing arbitrary horsepower numbers and deciding to atain them? I myself want to achieve 297.832whp

Id like to get somewhere between 250 and 300. Doesnt really matter where as long as the car is fairly fast. I'd like to do a catless up, TBE, tuning, injectors, pump, and a VF34. And throw a larger TMIC on there while im at it. Then i'll be done. the car still needs to be reliable.

I have almost the exact same goals and people have recommended that I go with a TD05 16G from deadbolt. I'll be doing that with the Monster P&P Job. I chose the 16G because this is still going to be my daily driver. If you dont need to keep it streetable, i suppose I would go with a bigger turbo, perhaps an 18g.

just my .02

idk.... i'm thinking of the same goals; 16g or 18g is the question (I currently have a protuned vf34). my thinking is why spend the $$$ on something that will just get me there? I know that eventually I'll want more; might as well go with the biggest turbo the 2.0l can handle- 18g is the answer.

Agreed! I say keep the stock turbo and tune on a very generous dyno. You might make your 300HP that way.

OTH, you might get an 18G and use a very conservative dyno to get 290. Which one do you suppose is faster? Which one do you suppose is more fun (hint:the answer is not always the one you expect).

now, of course the definition varies depending on who you're talking to, but an 18g is, imho, a LOOOOOOOOONNNNNG way off from "unstreetable."

I have a SMALL 16g, a catted Downpipe, and a STOCK sti muffler on my 2.0 and I hit 285whp on that dyno.. id say any of the ohter variant 16g's would have put me over 300 on that dyno.

(xxtuning's) also if i removed the cat/restrictive muffler i'd probably hit 300whp.. id guess
go with something larger than the pinks though. On a small 16g im at 95% idc on mine.. no comfort zone there.

Oh i would agree. Just im a fan of quick spool up and what not. I suppose I would do an 18G for myself, but for my goals I dont think it would be necessary. Im not dead bent on having 300whp but I will do my best with a 16G.

Later when my engine needs a build I'll do some forged internals and other stuff and make it a track car strictly.

+1 18G-TD05 but I think you'll need 650's the 550 (pinks) may not be enough

a guy at my work wanted the benefits of both the 16g and 18g so he got the 16g turbo with the 18g compressor but i'm too dumb to know if there is a benefit there.

there isnt, the 16g and 18g use the same turbine, so all he did was turn his turbo into an 18g (basically what FP does for their 18g's).

if you want the "benefits" from both id say your only chance is Super 16g or EvoIII 16g. they are the middle child, so to speak.

i'm not looking to just be able to say that my car is 300 AWHP...i'm definitely not being arbitrary...i've just been in some 300+ AWHP STI's and EVO's that have the power i'm looking for. I do love my fast spool up with the stock turbo and i'd definitely miss that if i upgrade. this is my daily driver and I want to keep it that way for now and still be able to get to some windy tracks and race it/time it. I haven't been to any tracks yet but i'm dying to hit a Limerock or something ASAP, even to just attend.

That's better. Here is one problem. 300whp in a 2.0 WRX will not feel like 300whp in a 2.5 STi. You will lose a lot down low to get to 300whp compared to a 2.5. The Evo at 300whp should be faster if for no other reason than the fact that it weighs less (~1/10 second better ETs per 100lb reduction).

That said, take a look at a VF30/34 or 16G for a nice increase in power without significant lag, the Super16/EvoIII for a bigger jump without much lag ( a great choice but pricey) and the 18G for a lot of power and a bit more lag (how much depends upon who you ask).

Those are the three steps for a 2.0 that I would recommend. I'll probably go with the Super16 or EvoIII if I can get a decent price, otherwise I'll take the cheaper of the VF34/16G options since my car is 100% street daily driven.

Oh, and IMHO a GT30r is too much for a street 2.0 but to each his own.
