need help with hybrid...won't start
ok...i've searched and found some tips but none of it will make my car start...
like alot of people here...i'm doing the 257 block with my wrx heads... everthing is put together by me and i'm positive i did everything by the books. I primed the system before starting and when i go to start the car...it only turns over but will start...the starter pretty much just turns the flywheel and nothing happens...any ideas on where else to look/check.. i've checked all engine harnesses/connections...(including crank and cam sensors)..good i've checked for fuel from fuel filter...good fuel lines are hook up correct... i've checked for spark...good SOC & SOH on Battery...100% i just don't know or can't think of where else to check/look...anyhelp would be greatly appreciated...

I bought a wiring harness from a 2003 wrx, the seller said it was in perfect shape, and it was in good shape. I rebuilt my friend's motor (this is the motor the harness was for), double checked everything, and it wouldn't fire! Well I went to the crank position sensor, and found a broken wire under the convoluted tubing, re-attached wire, and it fired right up.
To make a long story short, recheck your wiring going to the cam and crank position sensors. Jay |

now onto the engine....i checked for cel with ecu explorer and the only one that popped up was the tgv code...(tgv deletes) and checked the cam/crank sensors with that and they are both showing readings so that means the sensors are in good working condition...
checked for fuel at the injectors and yes...we have fuel... checked for spark...(again)...we have spark... checked ALL engine grounds...good... feels like i've narrowed everything down ALOT...but just something is still missing... i'll try to post up a video of how/what is sounds like or doing... what else do you think could be the caused...i went through fuel pressure/fuel injected/crank sensor/cam sensor diagnostics and one just kept on jumping to the other...'ie. if you have pressure, refer to fuel injected. and then if injectors are good, refer to fuel pressure.' and thanks so much for all the help guys... |

So you fired up? Do you have new injectors? Have you calibarated your injectors? When I upgraded injectors (810cc) my car ran like a** until I changed the flow. Also did you remove the small plastic housing for the TGV? It is spring loaded, and if you don't twist from a 90 degree position and retighten the car idles like junk.

no and yes...the car ONLY turns over...but will not fire, but there IS spark, and there IS fuel...i even sprayed some starter fluid into manifold via the brake boost nipple...and still no start...brand new red top battery...and injectors are all stock...and for the tgv's...i took out everthing and jb welded it...so the harnesses are just hanging there...
i'm just gonna go but me two new crank and cam sensors tomorrow and hope that it's that...even though my computer tells me that it's getting readings from them...i really hope this is it... |

my buddy was having issue with his hybrid too. said it wouldnt run for crap. he finally sourced his problem, the knock sensor. it was only tightened as much as he thought it needed to be, turns out it needed 17ftlbs. he reset the ecu and its a whole new car he said.

Are you sure that the left and right bank inlet cams are in correct order? If you have LHS and RHS swapped around the car won't start even if you have fuel and spark.

+1 on the timing belt/cam timing comments. I speak from experience, if its not correct, the engine won't fire.
The coil connectors are easier to check... |

I was thinking your timing was off as I read the thread, so I am glad you found out that problem before you messed up your valves. I recently did an ej257 swap with stock heads, sti headgasket, fp evo III 16g and supporting mods. Although my car started right up I had bad hesitation, funny idle and little power. I did an intake pressure test by using a 2 1/2" pvc pipe with a valve stem attached. placing the pipe into the turbo inlet and giving it about 10 psi I was able to identify one of my problems, a torn stock turbo inlet. It looked good when I put it on, but tore shortly after as I was breaking in the new motor. I ended up replacing all my vaccum lines along with a new silicone turbo inlet and it now holds decent pressure in the intake. Once I got the intake properly secured the car idled a lot better, but still hesitated and was down considerably on power. The problem is what awdwrxlover pointed out, and I am that very car he spoke of. My knock sensor was only tightened to around 14 ft lbs. When I put it at 17 ft lbs the car no longer detected false knock and started running like the hybrid motor it is supposed to be... a torquey sob. I am still currently on a base break in map, but as awdwrxlover can attest it is a pretty stout setup once running decent. Dyno day to come shortly. Good luck.
