Either is fine, it's just a matter of how you drive/take care of your car.

Both should be more than capable of handling what the stock turbos have to offer. Considering the v8 will be newer and sitting around for less time, it *should* be more reliable. But at the same time, it's next to impossible to say... w/o knowing how the previous owner(s) maintained it.

Anyone have any insight on how to pop out the pins for the F61 connector? I found some instructions on how to pop out the ECU pins, but it doesn't seem there is a little hole under the pins to stick a needle in with this connector. I am using this diagram and the accompanying instructions. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I have a bunch of extra ECU end connectors and I have not been able to depin them without mangling the connector. I was just playing with them to see how hard they were to get out.
Adding more pins is easy, getting them out cleanly is the challenge. |

Dumb question. Im assuming I can just get a reg OEM timing belt for 02-07 WRX/STi and it will work for EJ207?

I had never tried to do something like de-pinning before having to wire in my avcs but it actually went pretty smooth for me.
I ordered my 2 gaskets I needed from IAP and they should be here tomorrow, then I can drive my car!!! Off boost of course, need to contact Clark. |

Order a gates racing timing belt kit, the kit part number is on this thread buried some pages back from here, search. If I have time later I'll message you the part number. Check oakos, com, they have good prices and excellent service.

Necesary is probably not the right way to word it.
Here are two sub-questions: 1. Can you use a non-racing belt and it will still run? Yes. 2. Do you want to trust the people that made this engine and get the right belt? Then you can do 3 things: a. get the belt for the EJ207 from Japanparts. Not that expensive and you'll have it in 3-5 days. b. get the Sti pink belt, which my research shows is specified for USDM as well as EJ207. I did this c. get the gates belt. Many run it with good results and it's still a rigid belt. The racing belts are more rigid, allow for less timing distortion between the driver's and passenger's side cams and are needed for the higher RPM that the 207 can reach. They require more often replacement than the regular ones. The silver sticker on the right side of your engine tells you to replace the timing belt at 100 000 Km (62K Miles). Replace it again in 62K miles. Yes, many have used USDM OEM timing belts and did not report problems. This community, the EJ207 community, seems to do better with reliabillity of the engines. I think it's the engines, but I think it's also awareness and a willingness to do the right thing, to maintain them properly. |

Is the plastic piece on the bottom or top of the pin? I grappled with that connector for almost an hour and I was almost to the point of yanking them out the back. I was using a tack and then a small flat head I filed down to no avail.

One is where the other pin goes from the other connector and the smaller is where you poke with the pin/pick |

The racing belt kit comes with all the pulleys, tensioner and water pump. They have a similar kit with a standard belt for a little less money. I spent the extra few $$$, I just have a turbo back exhaust an inlet pipe and a 3 point ebcs. I plan on daily driving but I like to have some fun some times, this engines rev high, I want piece of mind and reliability, worth the extra money.

Hey I just want to throw this out there for you guys, since so many people are running non-matching ECUs. There are two different MAP sensors on these motors and ECUs. Make sure you are setup for the proper sensor otherwise you will be running ~2.3 psi higher or lower than you think. On an unrelated side note the VF36 feels amazing on E85 at 26 Psi

Do not ignore the idlers, tensioner, water pump, etc, replace everything at the same time as the belt, don't wait till you're sorry you didn't do it right the first time. Something other than the belt fails and the results can be just as bad.

I wouldn't change from this unless changing to a none OEM camshaft/valve spring configuration that would load the belt up more, OEM is designed for an 8200rpm limiter spec. Change your belt every 5 years, irespective of mileage, and do the idlers and tensioner at the same time. |
