Where do I get my rotors surfaced?
I picked up a set of RS front brakes a while back (thanks efoo), and I would like to finaly install them. The other day I looked at one of the rotors, and it was well rusted (damn moisture). Should I get them resurfaced before I put them on? If so, where do I have that done, and how much will it cost? Oh yeah, I plan on using new "Greens", does this matter?

Around here Napa and VIP autostores resurface rotors for around $15 each. Make sure they measure them so you'll know whether or not they are too thin. The minimum measurements are stamped right on the inside of the rotors. Take a look, it should be metric. Some one at the store should have a micrometer to make the measurements. The nearest Subaru dealer might do it to, just ask.

I had my rotors resurfaced for $20 / pair at a local brake / muffler shop. I also had X-Drilled rotors resurfaced at NAPA which charged me $27 / pair.

(maybe a stupid question) i was under the impression that you only re-surface the rotors if they are uneven? and even that you try not to because it takes out materials on them which affects its heat dissipating ability (more material the merrier)?

Seth,
Unless those rotors have been sitting outside all winter or have obvious grooves in them, don't bother turning them. Especially since they had fairly low miles on Edwin's car. A couple of hard stops will clean them right up. -WaC Wayne |

Heya-
You may just want to grab a bun of steel wool and scrub them a bit. It should come right off. That should clean them up. If you need something stronger, try a wire brush. If it still doesn't clean up, resurface em. -Rez <IMG SRC="http://www.reverberations.com/images/scrambles.gif" border=0> |

Green 3M ScotchPads - I find Work the best. Not to hard like a wire brush, and not as soft as steel wool. Gets the rust right off, and leaves the surface of the rotor smooth. - Kris

clean em up by hand and throw em on. you dont want to take material off if you dont have to since it will shorten their life and heat dissipation ability.
if you find they are warped its really easy to take them off and get them resurfaced at pep boys. |

I dropped them off at a local machine shop today. One of the rotors was REALLY rusted(not ust the usual surface rust). I had left them rapped in a towel in my garage over the winter. Some water must have in the towel, cuz when I picked them up the bottem side was WELL rusted. On well, it is only $24+tax.
