Default 2k2 Impreza 2.5 RS

hey everyone,

im new here, and i need some info please
im thining of getting a impreza 2.5rs, i have a 20,000 limit, i was wondering if the engine remaind the same as before, the reason why im asking is that so i can put turbo, and headers and stuff like that. What does the 2.5RS runs on a 1/4 mile stock? Is it a reliable car? What could be the potential of the car if i put 2,000-3000 in it?

Thanks

Attila

Car and Driver in the Dec. 99' issue tested a 2.5RS to go to 60 in 8.2 seconds and 1/4 mile of 16.3 seconds @ 84 mph.

In a more recent test of a 02' New Age RS- 7.9 seconds to 60 and I think 16.0 @86 mph.

So the new age RS is slightly faster, which is a mystery to me as to how thats possible. My bet is Car and Driver did a much harder launch with the 02' than the 00'.

You're much beter off buying a used 01 or 00 model on the boards, or getting a used WRX--there are a few around that are in really good shape.

could it be in the gearing? i know lexus changed the final drive ratio in the is300 w/5 speed to make it faster.

I would definatly say a .3 second difference is not something to get in a huff about. Weather, altitude, driving style, upper level jet stream velocity, local airline traffic, fruit prices, and planatery alignment can all affect times. Truth is, magazine racing dosen't work. It is easiest to say they just about the same. That statement may just break the hearts of the MY01 and prior guys because we all know there cars are better Good grief, this is getting almost as bad as the WRX/2.5 RS issue. "WRX owners are all bandwagon guys" "MY02 RS's suck, they're heavy and slow... all because they don't have a rear LSD" (note... neither did MY98-99 RS's, harass them too) Don't listen entirely to people here, you will get a biased opinion towards whatever that person may own. Go out, drive each of the cars, decide from there. Yes, they are reliable. Yes, drivelines are the same (with the exception of a rear LSD on MY00-01) so all your mods will work (suspension mods are dependednt on certain issues).

MY02 RS kicks a$$ in the city. Fast launches, awesome low end power. I wish it had more power on the highway though. Just came back from a weekend driving fest.

With 20mm rear sway, SP 5000s and SPT strut/springs, 02RS is very maneuverable.

Stock, 02RS had too much understeer and body roll.

If you only have $20K to spend on a car, where are you getting the other $7K for all the mods you already have planned for it?

If you only have $20K to spend on a car, where are you getting the other $7K for all the mods you already have planned for it? If you're going to turbo a new car, you might as well get a used RS (of whatever year) and turbo that, since you aren't worried about the warranty anyway. Or find a used WRX. I've seen a couple for $20K already.

The C&D was using a 98 DOHC RS which is slower than the Phase II SOHC RS. The 2000 RS does 0-60 in 7.7 and a 1/4 mile in 15.6sec according to SCC.

I mostly agree with Julian. There's no point in turboing an 02 RS/TS because there's already a complete model like that out there called the WRX which comes with a full factory warranty.

If you want the turbo and have $20k, save for a few months and get a WRX -- they can be had in the low $22k region right now - at least the wagon - $500 more for the sedan.

If you want to gradually build an N/A monster, then some flavor of RS will do. Remember too that a highly-modified/turbo RS will not have anywhere near the resale of a stock-ish WRX.

I bought a TS because (at the time) a WRX was $5500 more. This car is a bargain for the money.

I agree with Lordbass and Julian about the turbo issue. I saw a few pre-owned modded WRXs for sale at around $20K in the for sale forum.

I bought the 02RS to save bucks. Turns out, though. the RS is perfect for my driving environment. I just need to beef up the power a bit. Not going turbo, though.

I agree with you all on getting a new WRX or a used 2.5RS.
But see i am not paying for the car my parents will, and they wouldn't go above 20,000, and they won't let me get a used car so thats why.

But thanks a lot for the replies.

Attila

P.S.- the 2.5 rs is faster then my 98 Contour SE Auto 2.5 Duratec

Hmm...i'd say im on the same boat as you almost..im not getting my 2.5rs until June? And im planning to supercharge this baby, beacuse my parents dont want me to get a WRX because they don't like the idea of a turbo...see...they dont know about the supercharger =D

Until I read this thread I thought that the 2002 EJ-25 ran a slower 1/4 mile and 0-60 than a 2000. I think the 2002 is about 300lb heavier and the hp and torque has stayed the same.

I think you'llb e happy with the performance of a 2.5RS because it gives decent power and is a hell of a lotta fun to drive. My sister and I share a 2000 Subaru Legacy L Sedan and it's fun.

How fast will you get after dumping 2-3k in your car? Depends. Do you want to keep all the money for performance or split it with appearance? I'm sure if you make your car a sleeper (stock outside but build w/ performance), it'll be good depending what you put on it (exhaust, intake, headers).

Cheers and hope all these messages help =D

hey fukamoto

im going to try to get one this summer, and i am gonna make it a sleeper, except you know carbon fiber hood, wheels............but all those fancy goodies are the last thing..............im gonna try to get a stage 1 and stage 2 engine upgrade from cobb tuning for roughly 2 grand, which would make me go on a 1/4 mile low low 15's or high 14's.
PS: im going for all motor no add-ons

hey 2k2, i was in the exact same boat as you. got 20 gs for a christmass present towards a car, and i was in the same dilema. i really wanted the wrx, but it was over the limit. i looked at a 01, and it was priced higher than the 02, so i went with the 02 and i couldnt be happier. i like it a lot, and i plan to do a lot to it, it may take a few birthdays and x-mass' but it will happen! go with whichever one you like better, you cant go wrong.

p.s. if your gonna do mods to it, like a turbo charger, definately go with the rs, because these wrxers dont like to think about it, but a turboed RS will go faster than wrx. so take the extra 5 gs the wrx costs and put that into a turbo for your rs and youll be faster with money left over!

Agreed. Sentra Spec-V is one of the top cars on my shopping lists. But my parents are forcing me to get AWD...like i care =D Subaru all the way! but in all honesty, the Sentra Spec-V is really a smooth car. Sport Compact Car did a good article before it was released on the Nissna prototype. It's got a nice leather two-tone interior and sports [email protected] redline is at 6100rpm tho =( If you live around Vancouver, my sister's boyfriend, Ken Thai, works at Morrey Nissan on Lougheed Highway in Vancouver. I checked your profile but I guess it didn't list a location. Shop around before you buy

damn rich kids

"Mommy, Daddy, Buy me this!!!"

hehehee

Anyway, I love my 2.5RS I bought it Vs A WRX cause I was unsure of my job future, and it was a great reason since I did loose my job 3 months later, and the sub 500$ payments allowed me to pay for the car while I was on unemp.

now that I am back working I am looking at building the engine up. As much as the WRX is nice, its still got a 2.0L engine. With the 2.5L engine you guys can make some INSANE power for fairly simple. I mean you feed that 2.5L plant 6PSI of boost and you will suprise A LOT of WRX owners.

Who ever said "Carbon fiber hood" above should be kicked in the head. Why rice your Subie?! you want some Altezza tail lights to? maybe a fart pipe? If you want a sleeper the MOST you should end up doing is putting the WRX hood on ( for the hood scoop for a TMIC). I would focus on getting better tires and maybe wheels and suspension first. THEN worry about rice'n it

Also working on safe guards for going to higher power, like an updated fuel system, better motor and tranny mounts, Tranny upgrades ( Clutch/ or Torque Converter), and a new/piggyback ECU. Its very simple and cheap to just geta turbo kit ( 2500$ in some cases) but if you want rock solid reliability you will have to spend 2 - 3x that to do it right in some cases.

The Sentra is a nice looking ride, I wouldnt mind one of them if it was coming to me free from my mommy and daddy

Default 1/4 mile?

I have never tried a 1/4 mile in a straight line. For me, it would be no fun, especially in a car like my RS. I would say that if you want to go fast in the 1/4, get something that is 2 wheel drive. The Subaru looses a LOT of power going through the drivetrain, far more than any 2 wheel drive car that I know of, and its heavy.

If you want to drive hard in the dirt, rain, snow, ice, gravel, or make spirited turns....thats a different story.

By the way, if you are interested in street racing, I would suggest looking into the nearest race track and joining the NHRA or something like the SCCA instead. Its legal, and you won't have to worry about getting bailed out of jail, or killed, as has been happening around here lately.
